Year 4 Curriculum Leaflet Summer 1

How to support your child’s learning at home  Listen to your child read for 10 minutes every day.  Help them to learn their times tables.  Ensure that your child completes their homework.  Provide your child with a quiet place to work/read.

We have super new journals full of helpful tips to support work at home. Please ensure that journals are signed over the weekend and handed in each Monday to be checked.

Mrs Foote and Mr Heseldon run a drop in homework club on Monday and Tuesday lunchtimes for children who would like some help with their work.

Don’t forget that Swimming is on a Wednesday. PE kits should be in school at all times.

Homework goes home on a Friday and is due in by Tuesday.

Spellings go home on Friday to be tested the following Thursday.

Curriculum Overview Year 4 Summer Term 1

English: This term in English we are focusing on Non-chronological reports. The children will get the chance to analyse a variety of Non-chronological reports along with reading a selection of non-fiction texts linked to our Creative topic ‘Revolting Romans’. The overall outcome of this unit will be for them to create their own information leaflet based on ‘The Romans’. Prior to this, they will watch a range of video clips, read articles, use text mapping effectively and ‘box up’ their ideas ready to produce their own individual leaflets.

Creative Curriculum:

This term we are studying the ‘Revolting Romans’ as our Creative Curriculum topic.

Within this unit, children will learn about the lifestyle of the Ancient Romans, what they did for us and the influence they had on modern day Britain. The children will also recreate Roman Mosaic patterns, as well as taking part in a themed ‘Roman Day’ at school.

Maths:

We begin this term by applying our counting, sequencing and multiplication facts knowledge to handling data and measures. We will then look at the number system with a particular focus on decimals. The written method of division will be secured when finding fractions of shapes and amounts. Knowledge of the number system will be further applied when measuring lengths, volumes and masses. We will finally be developing our knowledge of symmetry, translations and time.

Science:

This term in Science lessons, children will be learning about Materials and States of Matter.

They will explore solids, liquids and gases and carry out investigations and experiments in order to look at the changes which can take place to alter a state.

ICT: The children will learn the difference between the internet and the World Wide Web. They will also create an animation to explain how the internet and World Wide Web work.

Music: Art and DT: Our Art and DT work this term will have close links to the Romans, with the children having opportunities to create mosaic patterns and design and make their own Roman style shield.

This half term children will be developing their skills of performing in 2/4 time. We will be learning the official march beats and linking this into a performing about the life of a Roman. We will be developing our vocal skills learning a song that includes sign language and then developing our instrumental skills to perform "The march of the Romans".

Hopefully all of this will happen as we confidently march around the school yard as a Roman army.

PE:

In PE this term the children will continue to take part in Outdoor and Adventurous Activities. They will develop team building skills in order to solve problems. Boys group 1 will continue swimming this term until May 10th. Boys group 2 will begin swimming on May 17th. Boys MUST have swimming trunks (not swimming shorts). Goggles are not allowed.
