Year 2H Curriculum Overview – Summer Term

English

Maths

We will continue to look at a range of nonfiction, fiction and poetry. We will be reading the book ‘The Disgusting Sandwich’ and writing a variety of texts:  diary entry  instructions  a new version of the story

We will be continuing to develop our mental calculation strategies particularly for addition, subtraction and doubling.

In grammar we will be learning to;  Identify different types of words in sentences including conjunctions, adjectives, nouns & verbs.  Identify the four sentence types; statement, command, question or exclamation.  Contract words using an apostrophe.  Use the correct punctuation in sentences (. ? ! , ). We will be reading the story ‘The Pig’s Knickers’ and writing a variety of texts:  a description of the farm setting  a letter of apology  a new version of the story. We will be reading and enjoying some poems about the Seaside and writing our own version of these. In grammar the children will be learning to;  Identify verbs and recognising both the past and present tenses.  Continue to identify and use the four sentence types.

We will be developing our knowledge of more formal written methods for calculating. The themes covered this term: Time •Tell and write the time to five minutes, including quarter past/to the hour and draw the hands on a clock face to show these times. •Know the number of minutes in an hour and the number of hours in a day. •Compare and sequence intervals of time. Mass •Choose and use appropriate standard units to estimate and measure mass (kg/g) to the nearest appropriate unit using scales. •Compare and order mass and record the results using >, < and =. Addition and Subtraction •Revise adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers using a standard method Capacity, volume and temperature •Choose and use appropriate standard units to estimate and measure capacity (litres/ml) and temperature (C) to the nearest appropriate unit, using thermometers and measuring containers. •Compare and order volume/capacity and record the results using >, < and =. Graphs •Interpret and construct simple pictograms, tally charts, block diagrams and simple tables. •Ask and answer simple questions by counting the number of objects in each category and sorting the categories by quantity.
