As well as weekly spelling and grammar lessons, this half- term 5M will be reading ‘War of The Worlds’ by H.G. Wells, as part of our topic ‘Earth and Space’. We will then use this as a stimulus to investigate a variety of genres - debates and persuasion, letterwriting, descriptive writing of characters/setting and book reviews. We will be studying metaphor poetry by Wes Magee, and use this to write our own poems about space. We will also be visiting Jodrell Bank in Cheshire to find out more about our topic. The children must continue to learn their spellings each week from the spelling list that is sent home and read their reading book daily. Please ensure that their book/record is sent in each day signed and ensure they complete their homework which is sent home on Friday.
Science Earth and Space This term, through a range of scientific enquiry and investigations, children in 5M will : Understand what the sun and solar system are. • Describe the movement of the Earth, and other planets, relative to the Sun in the solar system. Describe the movement of the Moon relative to the Earth. Describe the Sun Earth and Moon as approximately spherical bodies. Use the idea of the Earth’s rotation to explain day and night and the apparent movement of the sun across the sky.
Place Value: Read Roman numerals to 1000 (M) and recognise years written in Roman numerals. Convert percentages to decimal fractions and fractions. Find percentages of amounts. Addition and Subtraction: Add and subtract numbers mentally with increasingly large numbers. Use rounding to check answers to calculations and levels of accuracy. Measure: Calculate area and perimeter of regular/irregular shapes. Geometry: Investigate regular and irregular 2d shapes. Use the properties of rectangles to deduce related facts and find missing lengths and angles. Statistics: Complete, read and interpret information in tables, including timetables. Plot and interpret data in line graphs. The children must also continue to learn their tables at home and complete their weekly homework which is sent home on Friday.
P.E. The children will work together as teams to play cricket and basketball as well as participate in athletics in preparation for Sport’s Day.

Transformation Through this topic, the children will learn about the significance of the story ‘On the road to Emmaus’ and in order to do this they will examine two famous paintings by Caravaggio and Rembrandt. Then, we will learn about Pentecost and how the disciples received the Holy Spirit and how this allowed them to go out and spread God’s message.
