Year 2S Curriculum Overview Summer 1 In literacy we will be reading the book ‘The Disgusting Sandwich’ and writing a variety of texts including a diary entry, a new version of the story and a set of instructions for making their own disgusting sandwich! Guided reading this term will focus on inference and retrieval of information from a range of texts. In grammar the children will be learning to;  Identify different types of words in sentences including conjunctions, adjectives, nouns & verbs,  Identify whether a sentence is a statement, command, question or exclamation,  Contract words using an apostrophe  Use the correct punctuation in sentences (. ? ! , ) Measurement: Time  Tell and write the time to five minutes, including quarter past/to the hour and draw the hands on a clock face to show these times.  Know the number of minutes in an hour and the number of hours in a day.  Compare and sequence intervals of time. Measurement: Mass  Choose and use appropriate standard units to estimate and measure mass (kg/g) to the nearest appropriate unit using scales.  Compare and order mass and record the results using >, < and =. Addition and Subtraction  Revise adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers using a standard method Our RE topic this half term is ‘Pentecost – Spreading the Word’ and we will explore the questions;  What responsibilities are involved with passing on messages?  How did the Holy Spirit help the apostles to spread the news of God? Our topic in science is ‘Plants’ and the children will be learning to observe and describe how seeds grow into mature plants We will also be investigating different conditions a plant needs in order to survive and stay healthy. Our topic in history this term is ‘The Great Fire of London.’ The children will be comparing London in 1666 to London today and finding out about this terrible fire through diary extracts, paintings and research. The children will then write their own diary extract imagining they were in London the day the fire began. During games sessions children will participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending. They will use rolling, hitting, running, jumping, catching and kicking skills in combination. The children will use programs such as Scratch Junior, ALEX, and Bee-Bot to;  Understand what algorithms are; how they are implemented as programs on digital devices; and that programs execute by following precise and unambiguous instructions  Create and debug simple programs  Use logical reasoning to predict the behaviour of simple programs This term we will be creating a picture of London during ‘the blaze of 1666’ using chalk, pastels & collage.
