How to support your child’s learning at home

We aspire for 100% attendance. This is particularly important over the coming months. It is very difficult for children to catch up on missed learning.

Make sure you know your targets and are constantly striving to achieve them.

Homework Year 6 children are given homework every Friday to be handed in the following week. It’s best to spread the work out through the week rather than do it all in one go.

It must be completed to an acceptable standard which means that it must be at least as good as the work children produce in class, and written tasks must be completed in blue pen.

There will usually be a maths task, spellings to learn and a Literacy or Creative Curriculum activity.

Mr Heseldon runs a drop in homework club on Monday and Tuesday lunchtimes for children who would like some help with their work.

English: We begin the term looking at discussion texts, with a particular focus on fracking, an environmental issue that affects Lancashire. We will focus on developing cohesion through the use of adverbials such as ‘on the other hand’, ‘despite this’ and ‘in addition’. Peer assessments are used to help us evaluate and improve writing because it helps us reflect on what we need to do to improve.

Creative Curriculum: Every picture tells a story We are being inspired by artists and illustrators who create botanical and other scientific drawings to aid with the classification of plants and animals. We will gather ideas in Victoria Park and then will develop them into print blocks, so we can create striking monochrome images of animals and parts in our local area.

studying the natural world, particularly how animals and plants can be grouped. We will learn about important scientists who developed classification systems for living things, with an in depth look at Carl Linnaeus. Visiting Victoria Park will help us identify species local to us, and we will make connections between our scientific work and art.

Handwriting should be neatly joined in all pieces of work. If your child finds this difficult, please help them practice in their homework book. It is expected that handwriting and presentation is excellent in all books, including homework.

Within our guided reading sessions we are focusing on author’s choice of language and the effect this has on the reader.

Within our revision sessions, we are completing reading comprehensions under timed conditions to help for our SATs.

This half term we are focusing on using known number facts to work out calculations mentally. We will also be using the bar method to solve problems involving ratio and proportion. As part of our preparation for SATs we will also be working through a variety of past SAT questions to develop our understanding and reasoning across all areas of maths.

PE: This term children will be taking part in a number of outdoor and adventurous activities. These may include: orienteering, team challenges, problem solving and traversing across our new outdoor climbing wall.

Revision: In the run up to the SATs, we are practicing our arithmetic each week and thinking about the most efficient ways to answer calculations. Children are also developing their reasoning skills across a range of mathematical areas.
