Year 2 Curriculum Overview Spring 1 In fiction we will be reading the stories Gorilla and Man on the Moon. We will be writing a new version of Gorilla and a diary in role as the character Bob. In non-fiction we will be studying instruction texts and writing our own instructions for how to make a paper lantern. In grammar & punctuation the we will be learning to;  Use commas in lists  Identify and use the conjunctions for coordination (and, or, but)  Identify and use conjunctions for subordination (because, if, when, that)  Identify verbs in a sentence and change these to the past or present tense  Identify and use imperative verbs Measuring and Money  To combine amounts to make a particular value.  To find different combinations of coins to equal the same amounts of money.  To solve problems involving addition and subtraction of money of the same unit, including giving change Properties of Shape  To identify and describe properties of 2D shape including properties of shape and lines of symmetry.  To identify and describe properties of 3D shapes including number of faces, edges and vertices.  To identify 2D shapes on the surface of 3D shapes.  To compare and sort common 2D and 3D shapes and everyday objects.  To use mathematical language to describe position, direction and movement. Our RE topic is Holy Books and we will explore the questions;  Why do we need books?  How many kinds of books do we use and why?  What is special about the Bible and why is it important to us?

Science

Our topic in science is ‘Use of Everyday Materials’ and the children will be learning to:  Identify and compare the uses of a variety of everyday materials, including wood, metal, plastic, glass, brick, rock, paper and cardboard  Compare how things move on different surfaces.  Find out how shapes of solid objects made from some materials can be changed by squashing, bending, twisting or stretching.

History (topic)

This half term we will be exploring the question, ‘What was it like to live 100 years ago?’ We will be focusing on what life was like for children at this time and exploring home life, school life and toys & games. Dance lessons take place on Thursday afternoons and this terms topic is Cheerdance where the children are learning to be able to perform basic movements to music, and to build a simple themed dance focusing on CHEER. Games sessions will take place on Tuesday afternoon led by Mr Foster. The children will use programs such as Scratch Junior, ALEX, and Bee-Bot to;  Understand what algorithms are; how they are implemented as programs on digital devices; and that programs execute by following precise and unambiguous instructions  Create and debug simple programs Use logical reasoning to predict the behaviour of simple programs Our Art project this half term will be designing and making a game that could have been played 100 years ago.
