As well as daily guided reading sessions, weekly spelling, grammar and handwriting lessons, this term year 6 will be basing their writing around a variety of topics based on book-led learning. This term year 6 will learn how to: • create atmosphere within their writing.. o Description of setting/mood – eg pathetic fallacy (the dark skies loomed menacingly over her head). o Pacey sentences to build up tension. o Foreshadowing at the end of paragraphs. • integrate dialogue to convey character and advance the action. o Accurately set out speech with a range of appropriate synonyms for said o Speech is interwoven with the description, but does not dominate it. o Characters emotions are shown through what they say, how they act and how they move. • select vocabulary and grammatical structures that reflect the level of formality required mostly correctly o Language is pitched appropriately for the audience & purpose. o The ability to bring different voices to bring the writing to life. o Contractions to be used appropriately within formal/informal writing. • use a range of cohesive devices, including adverbials, within and across sentences and paragraphs o Using adverbials (temporal signposts) to show time: Suddenly… As quick as she could…. As the sun set… Earlier that morning o Pronouns used to link sentences: ‘Mick looked towards the library. It was almost closing, but he knew he had to enter it.’ o The tale on the dog! Referring to earlier ideas eg. As already stated…. As discussed earlier……

Along with daily Arithmetic practice year 6 will learn to: • demonstrate an understanding of place value, including large numbers and decimals. • calculate mentally, using efficient strategies such as manipulating expressions using commutative and distributive properties to simplify the calculation • use formal methods to solve multi-step problems • recognise the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages and can express them as equivalent quantities • calculate using fractions, decimals or percentages • substitute values into a simple formula to solve problems • calculate with measures • mathematical reasoning to find missing angles
