‘Why should the rainforest be important

Geography  How can you create your own class rainforest?  Where are rainforests located and what are

their main features?  Why are rainforests often in the news and what can we do to help?  What can you find out about an endangered animal that lives in a rainforest?  How important is the Amazon to the South American Rainforest?  How would you survive in the rainforest?

English

Year 5 our class novel next term is going to be ‘Danny, the Champion of the World’ by Roald Dahl.

We will also be learning about stories from other cultures with a focus on the Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry.

We will be creating an imformation booklet about the different layers of the Rainforest.

Maths This term we will continue to improve our understanding of fractions; we will continue to learn how to compare, order and find equivalent fractions and there will be lots of practical and visual methods to support the children and help them succeed. We will be improving our knowledge about the different units of measurement while also completing multi-step word problems involving all four operations.

RE Our topic this half term will be Hinduism. Our key learning will be ‘where we can find guidance about how to live our lives?’ Why is it important for communities to come together

for celebrations? What celebrations do children in our class take part in each year? What are the origins of Hinduism and Sikhism? Why and how is Diwali celebrated by both religions? Can I retell a story linked to Diwali?

Business Enterprise Last term the children put together a business plan for a creative card company and presented it to Mr Wilkinson (Business Enterprise Leader). With the business team’s hard work and presentation skills, they were successful in having their plan accepted.

Our Business team is: Shaun, Sumaiyah, Maria, Rachal, Jodie, Kieran, Ikram and Aliyah.

This half term all the children in Year 5 will be further promoting the business where we will be researching advertising techniques for Valentines day.

PE We will be continuing with swimming in to the new year at Palatine Leisure Centre. Swimming takes place on Thursday mornings. Our other PE lesson is on Monday afternoons.

Please ensure that your child’s PE kit and swimming kit are in school for every lesson.

Music In Music, we will be investigating Samba music and its history. The children will be experimenting with different beats and rhythms using a range of drums.

PSHCE In Year 5, PSHCE is taught throughout the curriculum and the importance of personal, social and health education is evident throughout lessons. Issues surrounding all areas of PSHCE are taught and discussed as a class and cover many aspects. We also teach and discuss British values, which are: Democracy, Mutual Respect and Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs, Rule Of Law and Individual Liberty in an age appropriate way. Aspects that will be covered over the year are:  British Values,  Appropriate behaviour both in and out of school,  Responsible adults we can talk to,  Healthy eating and exercise,  Different culture and beliefs, Personal hygiene,  Risks around us and staying safe,  Anti-bullying.

How to help at home

To support your child’s learning at home, please go through their homework with them. Ask if they have any problems understanding the tasks. If it is possible, talk about their day and ask what new things they have learnt. Please keep in regular contact with your child’s teacher and inform them of anything that may affect your child’s school day.
