Spring 1 and Spring 2 2017 Year 6 Have we always looked like this?

Learning Challenge Outcome This half term, the children will learn about inheritance and adaptation. They will become familiar with scientists such as Charles Darwin and Mary Anning.

English We will: • Read our class novel – The White Horse of Zennor, by Michael Morpurgo.

• Empathise with all characters and begin to understand the features of a Cornish myth.

• Create our own mythical creatures.

• Gain an understanding of different levels of formality within writing contexts.

• Explore the feelings of the characters through drama.

• Write a Cornish myth in the style of Michael Morpurgo.

• Prepare for the Spelling Punctuation and Grammar (SPaG) test in May. •Explore and analyse a range of text in preparation for the reading test in May.

Maths We will :  be learning how to convert fractions, decimals and percentages  be furthering our understanding of word problems involving different mathematical concepts  use and calculate measures  collect and analyse data including probability, ratio and proportion

The children will be using a range of resources to support their thinking and understanding in preparation for the SATS in May.

Science In Science we will:  learn how animals adapt to their habitats  raise questions about our own inheritance and

adaptations  create our own breed of dog  consider the story of evolution  explore the work of Mary Anning  Make our own sediment rock and fossils

Computing In Computing, the children will be:  learning about E-safety, the rules and

responsibilities expected of them and understanding the Acceptable Use Agreement.  planning, designing and creating an educational game involving sequence, selection, repetition and variables.  using Wordle to summarise what they have read during English.

Music In Music we will: ď‚— take part in Singing For Fun assemblies every

Wednesday afternoon. ď‚— perform in the Easter Concert at RLA and at Church.

RE Our topic this term will be Judaism.

The key challenge will be to understand life as a journey and that it is viewed by many as having many stages.

We will:  become familiar with the key stages in a Jew’s life.  begin to understand the key ceremonies in a Jewish person’s life.

PE During PE lessons, our children will be learning key athletic skills and how to be successful in team work.

PSHCE In Year 6, PSHCE is taught throughout the curriculum and the importance of personal, social and health education is evident throughout lessons. Issues surrounding all areas of PSHCE are taught and discussed as a class and cover many aspects. We also teach and discuss British Values: Democracy, Mutual Respect and Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs, Rule Of Law and Individual Liberty in an age appropriate way. Aspects that will be covered over the year are:  British Values,  Appropriate behaviour both in school and out of school,  Responsible adults we can talk to,  Healthy eating and exercise,  Different culture and beliefs,  Personal hygiene,  Risks around us and staying safe,  Anti-bullying.

How You Can Help At Home  Every week your child will receive Maths and English tasks to complete at 

  

home. A Creative Topic Challenge will be given out every half term .

It is expected that children will read at home at least five times in every 10 days.

If your child reads five times every 10 days, they will receive a gold coin to put in their school money box. Please sign your child’s reading record when they have read with you at home. When reading, please discuss the characters, what they predict will happen and ask them to recall events in their books.

Children will be given spellings to learn at home. Please help your child learn their spellings in readiness for a spelling test every Friday.

Please encourage your child to learn their times tables up to 12 x 12.
