Luke 18:9-14 The parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector offers a stark contrast between two attitudes that can be brought to our prayer. The first is a selfrighteous one which sees the spiritual life as being about one’s own efforts. The second is aware of its great human frailty and need for, indeed total dependence on, the gracious mercy of God. Most of us probably come somewhere between the two, but Jesus encourages us to cultivate the habit of not allowing ourselves to grow proud, especially in spiritual matters. It can be tempting to see our attendance at Mass, the regularity of our prayer, our commitment to activities in our parish, as somehow making us better than others. They do not; they are tools which can help to deepen our faith, but, ultimately, all is dependent on the love of God.
