This term the children will be looking at Light sources, including the Sun, shadows and reflections/mirrors and that shadow changes according to the position of the Sun. We will discuss why footballers in a night match often have four shadows.

Explain the relationship between the Sun and the Moon.

Design and make a periscope to show how light reflects.

Create a painting which shows reflection of light on water.

We will learn about What makes a Shadow, through the book-Clyde Robert Bulla The Owl that was afraid of the dark.

We will learn about adverts for our business enterprise.

We will also look at different cultures and the differences between Christmas and Divali.

Explore poems about light, rainbows or Christmas.

Look at the different shadows formed by translucent, opaque & transparent objects. Discuss how the transparency of materials can affect their uses.

Can you create a painting which shows reflection of light on water?

Create shadow puppets with detail because of the use of different materials. Make stained glass windows.

In Year 3 the children will take part in PSHE lessons frequently throughout the week. We will discuss a range of topics throughout the year and we will discuss issues that may arise during the week. Some of these topics will include: Healthy eating and exercise Bullying Staying safe How to be a good friend Appropriate and inappropriate behaviour both in school and out of school.

Additional Information Homework

Homework will be given out every fortnight on Friday and will be due in on the second Monday.

Children will have individual homework books that they will need to compete their homework in unless instructed otherwise. These books need to be handed in each week so new homework can be given.

Children will be given individual spelling cards at the start of the year, these are to be learnt at home. When the children have been tested and got the spellings correct they will move on to the next spelling card.

Reading

It is expected that children will read at least three times a week. If the children read three times a week they will receive a gold coin at the end of the week to put into their money boxes. If the children read five times a week they will get two coins.

Please sign the children's reading diaries when they have read so it can be changed regularly. It will be useful to discuss with the children the book, characters, what's happening, ask them different questions about what has happened in the book.

Reading regularly will help support your child's learning in school.
