The department has a range of top class facilities including a fitness suite, a multipurpose sports hall, a full size state of the art 3G astro-turf pitch and our most recent addition, the Sports Barn. This houses a full size indoor playing court for netball, basketball, handball, tennis and badminton. Alongside the court we have a top of the range specialist cricket facility with lanes designated for pace and spin bowling, alongside a specialist bowling machine.

As well as a choice of A Level and BTEC courses at Level 2 and 3, we also offer Level 1 Coaching Awards in football, rugby league, basketball and cricket, the Active IQ Level 2 Fitness Instructors Award, the Sports Leaders Level 2 Award, and the Higher Sports Leaders Award Level 3. All these additional qualifications can help your study, application to university or pathway into employment.

As a department, we organise visits to support your learning and invite relevant guest speakers from the sports industry. Recently these have included personal trainers, sports physiotherapists, performance analysts and sports coaches. There are also opportunities to be involved in trips abroad. In 2016, our students were given the opportunity to take part in work placements in Poland and Sweden.

ABOUT the subject

The BTEC Extended Certificate/Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science is an advanced full time, work related course. Students learn by completing assignments related to the many aspects of sport such as fitness, psychology, anatomy and physiology, sports injuries and coaching. In addition you will learn about the employment area of sport. It is therefore ideally suited for those interested in a sport related career or for those wishing to study the subject at degree level. The course is made up of 6 units in the first year (Extended Certificate) and 6 units in the second (Diploma). The course includes practical sessions wherever possible to help students apply theory into practice. ICT is used to support students in their work and the sports facilities available are outstanding, including a sports hall, 3G surface and fitness room.

ASSessment All modules are assessed through a variety of methods such as presentations, interviews, group work and written assignments, and are all graded at pass, merit or distinction, giving an overall grade for the qualification at the end of the course.

As this qualification is the equivalent to 2 Advanced Level qualifications, this will result in 2 final grades at the end of the course.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION linear a level ABOUT the subject Advanced Level Physical Education builds on your experience from Key Stage 4 and GCSE to equip students with knowledge, understanding and skills relating to scientific, sociocultural and practical aspects of physical education. Studying A Level PE will increase your understanding of the factors that affect both optimal performance and participation in physical education and sport. The qualification is designed to equip you with skills and knowledge required for higher education or wok.

The BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Sport is a full time course and is designed to equip individuals with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required for success in current and future employment in the sport, and related, industries. In particular it prepares you for study at Level 3 and also as a stepping-stone in to employment in the sport sector that requires a specialist Sport and Exercise Science grounding, at a junior/assistant level. course content The twelve-unit BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate offers a specialist qualification that focuses on particular aspects of employment within the sector. The course is over a one-year period and cover the following units: • • • • • • • • • •

As part of the course, there are also two examination units. These are: • Fitness for Sport and Exercise • Anatomy and Physiology for Sports Performance The course consists of a combination of practical and theoretical modules. Some modules will contain more practical work than others. This qualification has core, mandatory and optional specialist units, of which learners will need to complete all units. This is to ensure that all learners have a broad and balanced coverage of the vocational sector.

ASSessment The course will be assessed through a series of internally and externally assessed units. Two units will be assessed in the form of an exam, whilst the other units are assessed via a series of assignments. These assignments will be awarded pass, merit or distinction grades. A final double grade of pass, merit or distinction will be awarded at the end of the course.
