“The laboratory facilities at HNC were great! The staff were also really friendly. I loved learning the practical side of Chemistry we made aspirin!”
All courses involve lots of practical work. You may also do field work and scientific investigations, using apparatus and techniques such as data logging. You will have the opportunity to take part in enrichment activities and visits. The department has strong links with local universities, which allows us to welcome visiting lecturers throughout the year. Students also get to take part in masterclasses and taster days at universities. Each year we host a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) careers evening.

GCSE SCIENCE ABOUT the subject
ABOUT the subject This one-year course is aimed at students who have already taken a GCSE Science course. Most students who take this subject, study it alongside either BTEC qualifications or A Levels. They often choose Science because they require the qualification for entry to a particular career, for example, primary education or nursing.
Course content The subject content of the course is presented in five sections: • How science works • The three sections of the substantive content; Biology 1, Chemistry 1, Physics 1 • Controlled assessment Students will be provided with a student workbook and a revision guide that is specific to the course. Other activities involve learning with the aid of textbooks, computers, interactive whiteboards, OHP, posters, video/DVD and practical experiments. The course involves a variety of activities and methods of learning. Many of the lessons are based in a laboratory so students have experience of practical investigative work alongside the study of the theory. Practical work may involve individual and group work as well as teacher demonstrations. There is also individual monitoring and support to help students achieve their potential.
Homework will involve about 3 hours each week outside the classroom. This will include revising for tests, working through homework questions and completing the reports for practical assessments.
Assessment There are three 60 minute written examinations in June. We recommend most students take the Foundation paper but it is possible to take the Higher tier if students cover the additional work in their own time. There will also be a controlled assessment involving the planning and carrying out of a practical investigation and related test which counts for 25% of the marks.
Specific entry criteria Grade D in a GCSE Science (other than Core).
The college offers Applied Science options which are equivalent to one, two or three A Levels. All are based around developing an understanding of the fundamentals of science, the work of scientists and the science industries. They are excellent qualifications for students seeking to move on to higher education in a range of science related degree courses, or looking to pursue careers in areas such as hospital laboratory work and health related professions.
Specific entry criteria Grade 4 in GCSE English Language and grade 4 in GCSE Maths plus a grade C in a GCSE Science subject (other than Core) or a pass in a vocational level 2 Science qualification.

The Certificate/Extended Certificate (2yr) in Applied Science is usually taken with 2 other subjects. It provides a science element to a broad programme which might include sport, psychology or health and social care courses. It is not recommended for students who wish to progress to a career in science. The Extended Certificate (1yr)/ Diploma in Applied Science is usually taken with 1 other subject, to give a significant science element to a
programme. It opens up many sciencebased progression opportunities but also enables students to maintain breadth by studying other subjects alongside. The Foundation Diploma/Extended Diploma in Applied Science is usually taken alone, though students can choose to study one other subject in addition. These qualification options are for students wishing to study science as the main element of their advanced level programme. The specific range of units covered is dependent on the qualification taken.
Assessment These courses are assessed by coursework and external examinations. Students must complete and pass all of the units in year one of the course in order to progress to year two. Students have to be organised and disciplined in their approach since coursework deadlines must be rigorously adhered to.
