Whatever you choose to do as a career, an understanding of what businesses do and how they function will be important to your success. The diverse nature of the business world means that the study of business operations is very wide, with many specialist areas. To support this, we offer a range of courses allowing you to gain a broad understanding of how businesses operate or to specialise in a business function such as accounting or economics.

Progression Routes Many of our students choose one of two routes to develop their careers. Some will choose further study at university, some in a business field, but on a varied range of courses. Many learners pursue exciting careers in the business world; recent areas of employment include banking, insurance, retail management, accounting, administration and even social work.

ABOUT the subject

ABOUT the subject

This subject investigates real business situations to gain an understanding of how they operate. This will allow you to make a practical application of business concepts to make decisions in a range of situations. This course will also give you a real insight into the role of the entrepreneur by designing your own business idea. It will also allow you to look at the operations inside a business to generate ideas to improve a business. You will research in to the world outside of the business to gain a complete understanding of the business environment. Research areas might include the impact on a business of health scares, the economy, overseas imports, or competitor actions. Business is a popular subject. Many students are particularly motivated by the subject matter and are planning on taking a business related course at university.

Course content The first year of the course investigates the operations of small and medium size organisations, looking at their plans, goals and strategies. There is a strong focus on the core functions of a business which are marketing, finance, managing people and operations. Within each topic, you will study a range of businesses from the manufacturing and services sectors. The course is extremely current and has a specific focus on the use of technology to support all business operations. In the second year of the A Level, there is a lot more focus on the operations of larger and global businesses. Managing larger businesses with more resources is extremely demanding and the focus is on these techniques. It is vital in the second year of study that you develop a good understanding of current affairs, by engaging with rolling news and events in the local, national and

international environment. The work in the second year focuses on developing higher level skills of judgment and evaluation. Students are encouraged to think at a higher level, to analyse information and data, to evaluate different business issues, to recommend and justify courses of action, always presenting their case and supporting it with appropriate business theory. Both second year modules pick up on themes developed in the first year, but place the focus on problem solving in large organisations and developing the concepts at a much higher level. There will be an element of independent research into an exciting activity based around external influences affecting businesses, to develop your understanding of global issues. You will need to keep motivated throughout the course and be prepared to work outside of the classroom.

ASSessment A Level Business is assessed via external examinations at the end of the second academic year. There will be regular internal assessments which are graded to provide feedback on your progress. There will also be mock examinations to check your progress as you move through the course.

The study of Economics aims to give students an understanding and awareness of the basic economic questions and problems facing the UK and the international community. In this course you will develop an understanding of current economic issues and problems that affect everyday life. You will apply these concepts to a range of situations to explain real world phenomena. You will also assess the market economy and the role of government. Common areas for discussion will be ‘why are house prices so high?’, ‘can pollution effectively be controlled?’, ‘should governments interfere in markets?’ and ‘how are we affected by other countries?’. Many students see Economics as good preparation for further study at university, giving opportunities for a variety of interesting and well-paid careers. For others, Economics is a valuable course to complement their main interest in other subjects.

Course content Year 1

Year 2

The first year course consists of two different themes.

In the second year, another two themes are studied. Students are encouraged to think at a higher level to analyse information and data, to evaluate different economic issues, to recommend and justify courses of action, always presenting their case and supporting it with appropriate theory. Both second year modules pick up on themes developed in the first year, but places the focus on judgement, analysis and evaluation skills.

The first theme is based on Microeconomics. It covers a basic investigation into the economic problem and basic economic principles. This will include an understanding of how resources are allocated in competitive markets, production and efficiency, government intervention and market failure. Students will study important current topics such as whether the government should encourage private businesses to run schools and hospitals, whether university students should have to pay tuition fees and why the EU won’t allow Sky to have an exclusive contract for Premiership football matches. The second theme is based on Macroeconomics, which covers various issues such as inflation, unemployment and interest rates, with attention given to government policies on taxation, interest rates and exchange rates. You will look at how the UK performs and compare this against European and world economies. You will also investigate how the economy works by analysing demand and supply and how firms calculate their costs and profits.

Economics will require students to form judgements on various topical issues such as UK membership of the European Union, migration of labour, how markets can be made more competitive and how the government can best reduce national debt.

Assessment This course is assessed by external examinations at the end of the second academic year. Exam questions will require students to form judgements on a range of complex economic issues. Regular internal assessments will take place across the academic year, which are graded and provide feedback on your progress. All assessments will require students to answer exam questions similar to those in the final examinations.
