art and design AT HUDDERSFIELD NEW COLLEGE Studying within the Art and Design Department offers the experience of working with a creative and experienced staff team over a wide range of inspiring disciplines where outcomes are innovative and contemporary. Students can opt for one or more Linear A Level choices such as Fine Art, Graphic Communications, 3D Design or Textile Design and Photography, which complement and support other academic study, or select the more vocational BTEC Level 2 or Level 3 Diplomas in Art and Design. The department is housed in the college’s Art and Media Centre and in specialist suites of studios purpose built for 3D Design and Photography. Students working in the department have access to well-equipped, contemporary facilities, including state of the art Mac networks for Graphic Design, specialist Textile and Photography facilities and large Art studios.
In addition, there are often visiting professional arts practitioners who help students develop their professional understanding and practice beyond course limits. At the end of your course, you will take part in a large group exhibition for your Art and Design year group open to family, friends and invited guests. Students progress from Art and Design onto a range of academic courses or further specialised study in an Art or Design discipline. Some students also progress internally to the Pre-Degree BTEC Art and Design Foundation Diploma for students aged 18-19 preparing and strengthening portfolios for HE application or specific employment in Art and Design (please see separate L3/4 course leaflet).

btec level 3 foundation diploma/extended diploma in art and design ABOUT the subject The course aims to develop a broad range of vocational art and design skills within specialist areas such as art, graphic design, photography and 3D design. You will be introduced to a variety of media and techniques where you will have the opportunity to creatively apply a range of processes and use specialist equipment. You will study the work of other artists and designers and, throughout the course have the opportunity to develop a portfolio of work. You will work in response to assignment briefs, where it is important to fulfil all the identified requirements; this may include a timescale for completion of the work or producing work for a specific audience, purpose or environment. Towards the end of the course you will develop a final project in an area of your choice, which will form the basis of your final exhibition. This qualification is ideal for those students who wish to study a range of Art and Design disciplines in a vocational context. Students should progress from this course into a range of art and design careers, further training or take up higher education opportunities at university in Photography, Art, or Design specialisms such as Graphic, Interior or Product Design. Entry to the course will be supported and agreed over discussion of a portfolio of work supplied at interview.
course content The course is made up of a number of units which enable you to build experience in specific areas such as Art, Animation, 3D Crafts and Design, Graphics or Photography, therefore developing a broad and creative portfolio of work. The core units provide you with skills and knowledge that will develop your understanding of art and design processes. You will explore the work of professional artists and designers to inform your own ideas and to inspire your own work and professional development. In addition to the core units, you will also study specialist units that will develop your skills in a range of areas, which include: Art, Mixed Media and Photography: you will explore and develop a range
of techniques including drawing and mixed practical media, in order to create your own artwork, and will develop an understanding of how art is used commercially. You will explore the use of digital imaging techniques that will enable you to develop work in a range of genres. 3D Crafts/Design: you will explore the use of a range of materials and techniques and develop an understanding both of design and practical realisation of how these might be used to produce your own products, such as ceramics and sculptures. Graphic Design and Animation: you will explore a range of techniques (including hand and computer generated designs, using programmes such as Photoshop and Illustrator) in the production of advertisements and animation.
3D Design linear a level ABOUT the subject
course content
3D Design is aimed at students who enjoy creative problem solving through the visual conceptualisation of ideas, 2 & 3D modelling and/or realising practical solutions. In doing so, a broad range of specialist design skills will be developed together with an in depth knowledge of graphical techniques, computer based media, materials and craft based processes. The emphasis is placed on the visualisation, practical exploration, realisation, and testing of ideas.
Year 1: Developmental Coursework Component 1: Coursework During the first year students will compile a portfolio of coursework demonstrating creative design based skills, knowledge of materials and processes and a range of practical outcomes. The course will divide into two routes with one focussing more on Architecture and Interior Design and the other on 3D products ranging from the functional to aesthetic, including Automotive Design. Both will initially explore 3D design media, techniques and technology. In the compilation of their portfolio, students will make use of wide ranging graphical and CAD based processes, interactive use of online and library based research media, as well as have access to well equipped design rooms and workshop facilities in the development and realisation of ideas.
ASSessment
Students are encouraged to explore their own interests whilst taking into account the needs of the consumer society, for example, Product Design, Architecture and/or Interior Design, as well as developing visualisation skills in graphical and computer-based media. There will also be the possibility in year two to take part in a CAD award through Autodesk that would support university applications in terms of additional UCAS points.
The course is predominantly assessed through coursework assignments graded at pass, merit or distinction. There are four externally assessed units in the core unit section, some of which will be undertaken in examination conditions.
The course provides the opportunity to progress into Architecture, Interior Design, CAD, Product Design, Furniture Design, Automotive Design, Construction, Design Management, Teaching and Design Engineering.
specific entry criteria Grade 4 in GCSE English Language and grade C in a relevant GCSE Art or Design subject or a merit grade in a vocational equivalent.
A variety of teaching methods and learning styles are used such as practical realisations, independent research, presentations, case studies, external speakers and field trips. Work is supported through access to high quality specialist facilities.
ASSessment Each element will be internally assessed and externally moderated. After the examination period, students display work professionally within an exhibition space, open to all parents and friends, where success is celebrated.
Students will respond practically to broad starting points, producing a research portfolio that includes experimentation and idea development. Some of the outcomes may be supervised in controlled conditions to allow students to gain experience of exam working. Projects completed will build on the individual strengths of the student. Each element will be internally assessed. Year 2: Advanced Level Component 1: Coursework During the second year students will have the opportunity to extend their design skills and explore areas of personal interest through the
identification of client based briefs and the practical realisation of a major project. This could focus on Spatial Design, Product Design or Design Crafts. Students develop a personal, practical project based on an idea, issue, technique, concept or theme of interest to them, building on their strengths from year 1; this is accompanied by a 1000-3000 word written study, analysing an area of 3D Design which connects to their own practice. Component 2: Externally Assessed Assignment Students will respond practically to a broad starting point given by the examination board, producing a research portfolio including experimentation and idea development, resulting in a personal outcome. 15 hours of the work will be supervised in exam conditions. Work completed will build on the individual strengths of the student, and result in an ambitious, innovative and creative design outcome, the culmination of their practical achievements on the course.
specific entry criteria Grade 4 in GCSE English Language and grade C in a relevant GCSE Art or Design subject. If students have not taken a GCSE Art or Design subject, then a portfolio of work will be considered.
