They are up to date with knowledge and use interactive and positive teaching methods to provide a nurturing environment in which all learners are supported to achieve their potential. Staff embed practical work based skills that produce individuals who are employable, or capable of further study in the people sector, for example, nursing, social work, youth work and teaching. All Health and Social Care teachers at Huddersfield New College are vocationally experienced in the field and have qualifications relevant to the course they teach.

Work Placements You will be involved in vocational work placements in a range of Health and Social Care settings. This type of experience is essential for progression to university or careers in the sector. It is a chance to find out what goes on in the real world and to work with a team of professionals. The department has positive links with Health and Social Care organisations in the local community, meaning students benefit from good work placement experience during their time at the college. This is essential in applications to university and employment in the sector.

course content

To study this course, you should first and foremost have an interest in a career which involves working with people. The care sector is one of the country’s biggest and most diverse employers offering a wide range of jobs in both health and social care. This BTEC course will not only provide you with the knowledge and skills to pursue a career in the care sector but also provide you with a good foundation for many degree courses depending on your choice of other subjects. This is a course you can start from scratch and covers a wide variety of interesting topics. The theory is closely related to practice and you will take part in work experience. The course will enable you to develop your selfconfidence and communication skills through group work, role-plays and presentations as well as transferable skills such as time management and organisation, which are useful in any area of employment. The Extended Certificate is the equivalent of 1 full A Level covering 4 units in year one. This can be topped up in the second year by completing the Diploma in Health and Social Care. This involves studying an extra 4 units. On completion, this is equivilent to two A Levels across a 2 year programme. 3 units will be externally assessed across the 2 years.

The units could include some of the following: Human Lifespan Development will extend your understanding of the needs of individuals at different life stages, including their potential needs. Working in Health and Social Care will explore what it is like to work in the health and social care sector, including the roles and responsibilities of workers and organisations. Enquiries into Current Research in Health and Social Care will explore the methodologies of contemporary research and investigate the implications for health and social care practice and services. Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs will focus on the principles and practicalities that underpin meeting individuals’ care and support needs, which are the foundation of all the care disciplines. Work Experience in Health and Social Care will explore the benefits of work experience. Students carry out and reflect on a period of work experience, and plan for personal and professional development.

Notice - in order to progress to university for a medically orientated profession i.e nursing/midwifery it is important you also consider taking a Science subject alongside.

Promoting Public Health will explore the aims of public health policy and the current approaches to promoting and protecting health and encouraging behaviour change in the population.

Physiological Disorders and Their Care explores types of physiological disorders, the procedures for diagnosis, and the development of a treatment plan and provision of support for service users.

Principles of Safe Practice in Health and Social Care will explore the importance of safe working practices, safeguarding procedures and responding to emergency situations in health and social care settings.

Your work will be assessed through coursework and external assessment.

Sociological Perspectives will explore the application of sociological approaches to health and social care, and explore social inequalities, demographic change, and patterns and trends in social groups. Psychological Perspectives will explore key theoretical perspectives that have been put forward on psychological and physical development and how they are applied in different health and social care settings. Nutritional Health will explore concepts of nutritional health and influences on dietary intake, and learn how to assess and improve health through nutrition plans for individuals.
