SPANISH linear A LEVEL ABOUT the subject The purpose of studying Spanish at Advanced Level is to develop your skills beyond GCSE so that you can use and understand a much wider range of language. At advanced level you learn to expand this range of language so that you can talk about things that are happening in the world and learn more about life in the countries where the language is spoken. Spanish is a very useful qualification to have, whether at A Level or degree level. Obviously employers like the fact that you can communicate with their colleagues and customers abroad and making the effort to speak the foreign language goes down much better than expecting every conversation to be in English. At the same time having a qualification in Spanish means that you are aware of a different country, its culture and habits, and you will probably have had some experience of life in the country. You will also be particularly good at listening and summarising. Statistics show that modern languages graduates experience the lowest rates of unemployment after university. If you study Spanish at New College you will have the opportunity to spend time in Spain by taking part in our Spanish exchange trip to a school just outside of Valencia.
Modern foreign languages AT HUDDERSFIELD NEW COLLEGE
course content Year 1
Year 2
The two major topics which you’ll cover as you develop your language skills are Leisure and Lifestyles (including entertainment, customs, traditions) and The Individual and Society (including relationships, gender issues, youth culture, education and careers).
To continue to 2nd year, you will be assessed for progress during the 1st year.
In parallel to this you will revise and expand your knowledge of grammar, so that you can handle the language with confidence and adapt what you know to new situations. For example, you will learn more verb tenses and practise using them in lots of different contexts. In lessons we use a variety of methods to promote learning and you will do individual, pair and group work, writing and reading tasks, listening activities, presentations, interviews and role-plays. IT will play a part in your learning, for listening, grammar practice and topic research. You will have half an hour each week, on a 1-1 basis with a native Spanish speaker, to practise your spoken language skills. All assessments in year 1 will be internal and there will be 8 formal assessments throughout the year; grammar, translation, summarising and speaking assessments, all skills needed for A Level. You will also study a Spanish film in the first year.
As topics, we will study Social and Political Issues (including the media, work and unemployment, wealth and poverty and racism and terrorism). In addition, you will also study Spanish history and a Spanish book. There will be a small amount of new grammar and lots of revision! Your half hour conversation practice will be 1-to1 with the Spanish language assistant.

use. This will involve learning more grammatical structures, handling topics such as healthy living and youth culture in the first year and environmental issues and the media in the second. All assessment is by examination.
Many students who take a language at this level go on to do a degree course either entirely in a foreign language or in a foreign language combined with another subject. A post-GCSE qualification in a foreign language will be a valuable addition to your CV and will make you stand out from the crowd.
You will benefit from a half hour session with a native speaker of your chosen language every week. In the first year, you will find yourself in this class with just one other student, or in some cases, you will enjoy this session on a one-to-one basis. In the second year, you can take advantage of a personal conversation class, which is a real benefit when it comes to your oral exams.
You will build on the language that you have learned for GCSE and expand the range of language that you can
We pride ourselves on the facilities available in the college’s languages department, and our conversation spots are used to support or stretch our students to ensure that you achieve the best results possible; few college’s offer these opportunities to improve your command and confidence in your second language!
