English will be taught and explored through: o Spelling, grammar, handwriting o Exploring books about Traditional Tales and Egypt which include Cinderella and The Egyptian Cinderella o Writing to include non-fiction recounts, instructions, narrative o Poetry focus o Author focus – Roald Dahl o Reading aloud to develop confidence in reading with expression through intonation, tone, volume and action.

Fractions – adding and subtracting fractions and starting to learn decimal equivalents of fractions Number – practising recalling multiplication and division facts for all multiplication tables up to 12. All children will be learning to rapidly recall a variety of number bonds. The children will be able to order and compare numbers greater than 1000 and to recognise the place value of each digit in a four digit number. We will focus our calculation work on adding and subtracting using the column method with four digit numbers. Measurement - the children will be solving problems involving converting between different units of measure, for example km to m, g and kg. To measure and calculate the perimeter of regular 2D shapes in cm and m. Mental Strategies – year 4 will be taught to use the partitioning method to double and halve numbers, also to add and subtract digits mentally.

Who were the Ancient Egyptians? This unit will teach year 4 in depth about the achievements of this ancient civilisation. They will learn about how and where the ancient Egyptians lived, what was important to the daily lives of ancient Egyptians, who Tutankhamun was and how mummies were made. The children will also learn about how Egyptian people used hieroglyphs to communicate and compare the powers of different Gods.

Come and See: Family The children will be exploring their own families and the family of God. They will create family trees, share them and reflect on what it means to belong to a family. They will retell stories from scripture about Jesus and his family and understand that Jesus had a family like our own.

During this half term the children will be directing their learning through the subject History and the Ancient Egyptians.

States of Matter This unit will teach Year 4 about the differences between solids, liquids and gases, classifying objects and identifying their properties. The children will work scientifically and collaboratively to conduct investigations. They will explore changes in states, exploring melting, freezing, condensing as well as a particular focus on evaporation. Finally, they will learn about the stages of the water cycle.

Computing will be involved largely throughout the curriculum and our topic on Ancient Egypt. The children will have the opportunity to design, write and debug programs. Pupils will use sequence, selection and repetition through programs. They will use search technologies effectively to research topics and be taught the importance of how to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly.

Skills include: o

During Year 4’s weekly Spanish lessons the children will be listening and responding in Spanish. They will be taught how to converse; ask and answer questions. The children should be able to speak in sentences, express their ideas and describe things orally. They will understand written words and phrases, and broaden their vocabulary.

football - learning how to dribble the ball, turn and change directions netball - the children will be taught different types of passing and working on their footwork. They will be taught the roles of players gymnastics – demonstrating balances using their body, and be expected to use appropriate vocabulary to describe what they or others are doing.

Year 4’s theme within PSHE is Health and Wellbeing, this topic provides children the opportunity to reflect on and celebrate their achievements and deepen their understanding of good and not so good feelings. They will be expected to extend their vocabulary to enable them to explain both the range and intensity of their feelings to others and to recognise that they may experience conflicting emotions.
