Year 5 Autumn term

Our Learning challenge this term is to find out ‘How could Hilter have convinced a nation like Germany to follow him?’

We will be investigating different areas of the curriculum including a school trip to a Lancashire museum. In addition, a World War 2 evacuee is going to visit the children and hold a question and answer session. This is to help excite and inspire our children to learn about their topic.

When asked what they would like to learn, children in year 5 said they wanted to find out: How long did the war last?

English

We will be supporting our learning in English by reading ‘Friend or Foe’ by Michael Morpurgo. We shall use this as our novel to complete our Nonfiction writing.

We will also be writing Non-fiction reports about a wartime bombing of Blackpool and will consider the language we use to ensure we engage and inform the reader.

We will be using many different books to help us gain inspiration for our story writing including Goodnight Mr Tom, Anne Frank’s Diary and many more.

Reading Reading regularly at school and home is a very good way to improve vocabulary and develop knowledge. The children will have regular reading sessions at school but would benefit further by sharing and discussing texts at home. You can always ask the 5 W’s ‘Who, What, When, Where and Why’ when helping your child to gain a deeper understanding of a text. Allow your child to read a range of different texts such as road signs and cooking instructions. Please feel free to contact school if you would like more tips on how to improve and increase your child’s reading at home.

Maths We will be covering different aspects of maths including place value, addition and subtraction, word problems, geometry, interpreting data and measure.

We will be solving problems and investigating how we can use our mathematical knowledge and understanding in different situations and contexts.

Different ways to support your child with their maths at home would be to: Ask your child to calculate the cost of different items when you do your shopping by keeping a total. Then work out the total amount and how much change you should expect.

Ask your child what the time is and to talk about time using both analogue and digital clocks.

Go through the multiplication table. Pick one table / multiple for a week and really focus on this. Ensure that you ask both times and divide questions to deepen their knowledge and understanding.

Science

Our science topic this half term is ‘Forces’. We will be asking and answering exciting questions like ‘What is friction and how does it affect moving objects?’ and ‘What is gravity and why is Isaac Newton linked to it?’. During our science topic, we will be conducting a variety of different experiments to find answers to our key questions.

Art Our key question in our Art topic is ‘How have European artists captured the horror of the war?’ To answer this we will be examining a range of different artists who have captured different images of the war while discussing what we think the artist was feeling when they created the image. We will be creating our own piece of ‘war art’ in class with a local artist coming in to support our learning.

We will also be designing our own warplane to link closely to our science topic of forces.

Music

In keeping with our learning challenge key question of ‘How did Hitler convince a nation like Germany to follow him?’ during our music lessons, we will be listening to wartime music with famous artists such as Vera Lyn. The children will be discussing how the music makes them feel.

PE We will be swimming this year at Paletine Leisure Centre.

Swimming takes place on Thursday mornings. Our other PE lesson is on Tuesday afternoons where we will be getting our groove on with street dance. Please ensure that your child’s PE kit and Swimming kit are in school for every lesson.

PSHE During our PSHE lessons, we will be learning about new beginnings and thinking about what that means to us as learners. We will be understanding our feelings and acknowledging the feelings of others. We will be developing our social skills and focusing on making the right choices.

Design and Technology This term we will be looking to answer the question, ‘How far will our model plane fly?’ which links with our science topic of forces. We will be designing our own model planes and then creating them using different materials.

Business and Enterprise The children will be discussing with each other about how to design a product or service which will make them a profit.

They will need to consider what ‘gaps’ there are in the school market and what will provide them with the most success.

How to help at home To support your child’s learning at home, please go through their homework with them.

Ask if they have any problems understanding the tasks. If it is possible, talk about their day and ask what new things they have learnt.

Please keep in regular contact with your child’s teacher and inform them of anything that may affect your child’s school day.
