We thought we would start 2016 by sharing with you some highlights of the Autumn term. These highlights illustrate the wide range of activity our students engage in, both inside and outside of the classroom. These activities help support them to hone the personal skills and qualities that they will need to progress successfully from the college to university or the world of work.

Alongside their personal skills and qualities, our students will also need excellent examination results to progress successfully from the college to university or the world of work, and so we were delighted that in August 2015 student performance at A Level and on BTEC qualifications was excellent and placed the college in the top 20% of all schools and colleges nationally for value added success. Nearly all of our Class of 2015 made outstanding progress during their time at Huddersfield New College. We celebrated this with them, and their family and friends, at Huddersfield Town Hall early in January and it was a fabulous occasion.

IT’S SHOWTIME

Dance and Musical Theatre students took to the Lawrence Batley stage in a fantastic display of talent, performing a medley of Musical Theatre numbers, solo dances and group numbers to a delighted and sold out audience.

Dance Course Leader, Cat John, who organises the annual event, was supported by dance tutors Seb Simpson, Miriam Clay, Fiona Noonan and Lesley Smith, who are well known in their fields and provide additional dance tuition for the College’s Dance and Musical Theatre students.

Huddersfield New College enjoyed its very own Great British Bake Off this term, which culminated in a grand finale on Wednesday 9th December. The competition was run in association with Taylor Shaw, the College’s catering provider, who hosted the weekly sessions in the College’s kitchens. The Catering Class of 2015 consisted of New College students Areeba Islam, Kate McQuillan and Aleena Ashraf, who spent four weeks being coached by Taylor Shaw’s Head Chef Guy Woodbridge, on-site baker Andrew Barara, and the Catering Manager, Ashley Birchall. The bakers were provided with all of the ingredients and chef’s clothing, and spent two hours per week perfecting their culinary creations.

THE GBBO

Week 1 saw the bakers tackling brownies and muffins, before moving on to bread in Week 2, followed by puff and choux pastries in Week 3. The 4th and final week was dedicated to creating showstopper bakes, which were then presented to the judges, who had the tough job of deciding on a winner of the competition.

Personal favourites from the evening were Ethan Marescaux’s performance of ‘Bring Him Home’ (Les Miserables), Maddie Lawton’s beautiful ballet solo, and a fantastic and rousing performance of ‘Africa’ by the College’s Musical Theatre students.

The formal judging and presentation ceremony took place in the College’s Dining Hall, with the College’s Catering Manager, Ashley, hosting the nail-biting event. The guest judging team consisted of Taylor Shaw Operations Director Pamela Dixon and HNC Principal Angela Williams, with help from Deputy Principal, Peter Kennedy and Assistant Principal, Glyn Barker.

This was the first year that the annual Dance and Musical Theatre showcase was held at the Lawrence Batley Theatre, and with a sell out audience, it surely won’t be the last!

After some careful consideration from the judges, Areeba Islam was crowned the winner of the competition to become the HNC Baker 2015, with her fantastic sponge and butter cream Christmas cake, finished with layered icing and mini chocolate chip cupcakes. Areeba won a £50 prize accompanied by certificates and a Taylor Shaw gift.

Runners up Kate McQuillan and Aleena Ashraf received £20 awards, with the judges commending their show-stoppers on both taste and design.

The HNC Bake Off-ers are hoping to compete against other colleges in the North in the near future, so watch this space!

L New College Health and Social Care students made their first donations of Lego Sets to local charity, the Forget me Not Children’s Hospice.

In early November, five Huddersfield New College students took part in the Erasmus+ programme, an EU student exchange programme.

Luke Wood, Rebecca Morris, Katie Lockwood, Jack Senior and Jonathan Raw visited Poland, completing their placements at Zespot Szkot School in Bielsko-Biala, a city in Southern Poland that is around two hours away from Krakow. The students spent two weeks delivering sports sessions with students from the school five days a week, and spent their evenings and weekends enjoying volleyball and handball, taking part in karate sessions and also visiting Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.

As well as giving the students the opportunity to engage in some cultural experiences, the trip also

allowed them to see how similar courses to theirs operate in colleges in other countries, and how practical and theory lessons are carried out elsewhere.

They also showed the Polish students what they learn here in the UK, and exchanged some new ideas.

Pete Lombard, HNC’s Lead Cricket Coach, said “I think it’s great that our sport students had the opportunity to experience this trip through college.

It’s a great life experience to go away from home at the age of 17 and 18, spending two weeks in a non-English speaking country and learning how to adapt to this.”

Huddersfield New College will be running further Erasmus programmes throughout 2016.

SPORTS STARS

Huddersfield New College sports students have gone on to achieve fantastic success this year...

The Lego Brick Club, run in association with Fairy Bricks, runs after school clubs for primary school children. The sessions have been used to raise money, which has been used to purchase Lego sets for children in local hospices and hospitals.

Chris Madej, Head of Health and Social Care at the College, said “it was humbling for our students to see how the donations will be used in the local community and to see how appreciative the organisation was.

Our student helpers have worked really hard to make the Lego Brick club a success and this is the start of something wonderful”.

HNC Lego Brick Club runs every Wednesday, commencing on October 7th. Initially open to pupils from St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School, the College is hoping to roll it out to further schools within the community. It takes place between 6pm and 7pm within the Health and Social Care department at the College.

CELEBRATION EVENING Former students of Huddersfield New College have started the new year in style, as the class of 2015 gathered at Huddersfield Town Hall for the college’s annual awards evening.

In front of a packed out auditorium, approximately 900 special guests, staff, students and their families came together to celebrate the achievements of Huddersfield New College’s Class of 2015, making it one of the most successful awards ceremony for the college.

Special guests included Conservative MP Jason McCartney, University of Huddersfield’s Deputy Vice Chancellor Tim Thornton, and Mayor of Kirklees Cllr Paul Kane. The Vice Chancellor of Huddersfield University, Professor Bob Cryan’s Personal Award for the Most Inspiring Student was presented to Sarah Dransfield in his absence by Tim Thornton, who was also the guest speaker for the evening.

LEGO BRICK CLUB

All the students in attendance had an extra reason to celebrate this year, as they all played a part in helping the college to post some of its best ever exam results in August 2015, ensuring that the college remained number one in the Kirklees area for student achievement.

Guests enjoyed a musical opening to the evening, with Ella Greenwood delivering a piano performance during the Drinks Reception, followed by Sophie Stones’ performance of 2nd Movement from Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto and a vocal solo from Ethan Marescaux, who sang Bring Him Home from the musical ‘Les Miserables’.

Almost 300 students were recognised for their achievements at college, receiving certificates, vouchers and plaques to celebrate and reward their success. Nine of those students were also given special awards for their exceptional performance inside and outside of college.

The Deputy Mayor of Kirklees, Cllr Paul Kane, presented the Huddersfield New College Award for Contribution to the Wider Community to Jacob Holmes.

Jennifer O’Sullivan received the Sheffield Hallam University Annual Academic Achievement Award, presented by the Chair of Governors, Linda Summers.

Jennifer achieved a fantastic 4 A*s and 1 A at A Level in 2015.

The final special award of the evening was presented by the College’s Principal, Angela Williams to Lucy Myers, Megan Hirst, Bethany Gill, Katie Gallagher and Tyra Bown, who were all nominated for the Contribution to the College Community Award.

Linda Summers provided the closing remarks after Student Union representative, Ronan Charnock’s, vote of thanks.

Principal, Angela Williams, said “We are genuinely proud of the achievements of our Class of 2015: top 20% nationally for their performance on A Levels and BTECs! We hope that they have loved their time at HNC. We have loved working with them and we will miss them. We wish them every happiness in the future and look forward to hearing about the amazing things they go on to do next.”
