Top Tips for Parents and Carers: Talk to your child about stories in the news-help them to get a balanced view and encourage debate. Talk to them about their life online- and check what they are viewing. Do you know how much time they are spending online and who they are in contact with? What are they viewing? Establish times with family away from phones/social media. Do you know where your children are? Who are your children spending time with? If they are going to youth clubs/faith groups/football groups etc. what do you know about the organisation and the people running it? Are safeguarding systems in place? Show them how to get involved in causes through the right channelsRSPCA/CAFOD/Red Cross etc. Remember extremism comes in many shapes and forms-If you notice your child becoming more extreme in their views or becoming secretive about who they are talking to/meeting then challenge them. Don’t be afraid to share your concerns-you know your child best. If you are concerned about changes in them seek advice from your GP or school. Don’t assume extremism only affects a particular religion/ethnic group-it can happen to anyone.
Is extremism really a risk in our area? Extremism can take many forms, including political, religious and misogynistic extremism. Some of these may be a bigger threat in our area than others. We aim to give our children the skills to protect them from any extremist views they encounter, now or later in their lives.
