Every pupil in the school as well as many members of staff have been given the opportunity to join the Ashton Maths 50 club. The entry requirements are very simple, 50 times table questions done on your own, if you get all 50 correct you’re in! There’s one chance per term to join and after the first two chances there are now 334 members, made up of 68 from year 7, 53 from year 8, 48 from year 9, 84 from year 10, 55 from year 11 and 26 staff.

Some people have made sure that they get in by taking their time while others have aimed for the fastest time possible to try to be on top of their year group’s leader board. The best staff time so far is 46 seconds with the best pupil coming in at 1 min 12 seconds. All members as well as the top 5 times in each year group are on the honours board in the maths department.

If you've missed out this time around don't worry! 50 club will be back for the 3rd and final time this school year after the Easter holidays where HOUSE POINTS will also be up for grabs. Time to get practising! REMEMBER 11 x 12 = 132.

Mentoring Following its successful introduction last year, we are again running our mentoring programme with our Year 11 students. Every year 11 student is paired with a member of school staff to give additional support in the run up to the exam season. This week saw the second scheduled meeting take place with conversations ranging from revision timetables to catch-up sessions and from stress beating techniques to memory aids for making sure learning sticks. Feedback tells us the students really appreciate having a friendly ear to listen to their concerns at this very busy and crucial time in their Ashton careers.

Expressive Arts Up coming events STAR Choir Thirty students from years seven and eight are taking part in STAR choir (Standing Together Against Racism). STAR choir is a mass choir made up from several local schools in Preston.

They have been rehearsing hard attending three full day rehearsals in preparation for their final performance in ’53 Degrees’ in Preston on Friday 18th March 2016, 7.30pm. Please come and support them as they sing; One Love, I Had a Dream, Do You Hear the People Sing, Search for the Hero, One Day like This and Sing.

Ashton’s Got Talent Auditions On the 24th February 2016, the Performing Arts department held auditions for the upcoming talent show on the 7th April.

Many talents were displayed during the auditions from singers, to magicians, dancers, cheerleaders, rappers, Minecraft Acting and piano players. Those through to the next stage, (The Finalists) are now practising hard every Wednesday after school. Additional performances from the dance groups, primary school winner and a staff act will introduce and end the show. Who will win? The judges will decide!

World Book Day Last year’s World Book Day was filled with lots of fun activities participated in by years 7 and 8.

Many students dressed as their favourite book characters, and several members of staff joined in too. There were lots of creative ideas, which included Maleficent, Miss Trunchbull and several Where’s Wally clones.

Firstly, we had to make poems, which were called Blackout Poems. These included picking specific words out of a text to form a poem. Once they were done, they were decorated and some of them were chosen to be displayed in the English corridor, where they still are to this day.

Then, instead of English, we got to write a story about community. The different students interpreted this word in many different ways. “This was a fun activity where I got to improve my creative writing”, said a student in Year 8.

Next, students wrote about a character chosen by staff, based on the contents of their bag.

This improved interpretation skills. This was then followed by making up your own character up, then writing in their bag for the class to guess.

Afterwards, we got the opportunity to rewrite popular fairy tales. All of these were sent off, and some were published.

Finally, years 7 and 8 were gathered in the hall for a book themed assembly. Here, the winners for the best costumes were announced. Last year’s winner was a girl in year 8, who dressed up as the woman in black. Also, 2 classes (7s and 7t) preformed their poems they wrote in lesson 3 with Mrs Barrow. These consisted of each student having a line to say in a big poem they wrote about camping and trips to the beach.

In conclusion, it was a great World Book Day, with everyone having fun and learning skills they never knew they had. Will this year’s beat it?

Library News Loyalty Cards Last month we introduced Loyalty Cards to promote book lending in the Library. When a pupil has read a book and returned it they are given a loyalty card. This is signed by Miss Roberts and the pupils keep this until they have read eight books. After that they can choose a free book to keep from a selection available. It is working really well so far and book borrowing is on the up!

Congratulations to Jack Yeung on being the first person in the school to complete his Library Loyalty Card. We hope you enjoy your book, Jack.
