How to support your child’s learning at home:  Listen to your child read for 10 minutes every day.  Help them to learn their times tables.  Ensure that your child completes their homework.  Provide your child with a quiet place to work/read.

Don’t forget that Swimming is on a Wednesday. PE kits should be in school at all times.

Homework goes home on a Friday and is due in by Tuesday.

Spellings go home on Friday to be tested the following Thursday.

Curriculum Overview Year 4 Spring Term 2

English:

Maths:

Creative Curriculum:

In Literacy we will be focusing on Stories that Raise Issues and Dilemmas. The children will take an active role in performing a story with actions. They will create their own version of an existing story by altering the characters and thinking of their own issue and dilemma.

Towards the end of the term we will look at debates and children will consider different points of view to argue for or against a particular issue.

We will be starting our work on mental multiplication and written division strategies. Children will learn how to identify factors and divide by chunking on a number line. We will them progress on to written methods of multiplication.

Previous work on place value will be extended. Children will also develop their existing knowledge of shape and understanding of positional and directional vocabulary.

This half term, lessons will be based around our Art theme ‘Every Picture Tells a Story’. Children will learn about the similarities and differences between three artists from different cultures: Wassily Kadinsky, Paul Klee and Aboriginal Art. They will identify a story that the picture tells. They will also use maps to research where the style of Art originates from.

ICT:

Science:

The children will learn the difference between the internet and the World Wide Web. They will also be using a paint program to create images in the style of artists that use lines and circles to produce abstract pictures/aboriginal art.

In science we will be focusing on the topic of Sound. We will explore a range of sounds and identify different tones and pitch. Children will take part in a sound walk around the school to identify different sounds.

Art, DT and Music: In Music we will be performing music for dance and composing our own dance pieces. We will be writing compositions as a graphic score, presented through art not musical notes.

Our art work will be inspired by the three artists mentioned opposite and children will create images using shapes, lines and circles to tell a story.

P.E. In PE this term the children will continue to develop skills in preparation for invasion games. They will complete a gymnastics sequence in small groups.

Boys group 1 will start swimming later this term. Boys MUST have swimming trunks (not swimming shorts). Goggles are not allowed.
