Year 4 Curriculum Overview Spring Term 1

How to support your child’s learning at home:  Please make sure that you look at, and sign, your child’s journal every week.  Listen to your child read for 10 minutes every day.  Help them to learn their times tables.  Ensure that your child completes their homework.  Provide your child with a quiet place to

work/read.

Don’t forget that PE kits are required in school all term.

Homework goes home on a Friday and is due in by Tuesday.

Spellings go home on Friday to be tested the following Thursday.

Curriculum Overview Year 4 Spring Term 1

Creative Curriculum: English: We are spending this half term focusing upon recounts texts, in particular newspapers. The children will be working towards writing their own newspaper in conjunction with our theme of Space. We will continue to build on our grammar skills including reported speech.

The children will be researching the science of space flight and designing and making their own space rockets. We will find out about the history of the Moon Landings which will form part of our Literacy work and look at life on board a space station.

Maths: We will continue to work hard in Maths, starting with reinforcing our work from last Half Term on column addition and subtraction. We will also be measuring and handling data related to our Space theme, where we will compare the planets in our Solar System. We will also build on our knowledge of place value, fractions and mental and written methods of division.

ICT:

Visits:

The children will be using green screen technology to produce movies of themselves in space.

This same technology will also be used to present news reports about space travel and moon landings.

There are currently no plans for any visits this half term, but watch this space!

Art and Music:

P.E.

In Music we will be listening to and responding to music that has been inspired

by Space as well as composing our own pieces.

Our art work will also be inspired by our study of Space and the planets. The children will continue to work with Mrs Marshall and will create a ‘Junk Orchestra’.

This Half Term we will be developing children’s gymnastics skills.

Please ensure that your child’s PE kit is in school for every lesson and has their name in. It can be taken home every half term.

No jewelry is allowed during PE lessons.

Also this half term, Burnley Football Club will be in school to teach the children Multi Skills.
