Spring Term 1

Creative Curriculum: English: We travel to The Amazon this half term as we meet Maia, a young girl who is sent to live a long way from home. As we read Journey to the River Sea, we will develop our writing and grammar skills in a variety of different ways to enable us to write our own story with a historical setting. Our focus will be blending action, dialogue and description in order to engage our audience. We will also spend a lot of time investigating vocabulary as we strive to become confident readers and writers to prepare us for our futures.

We began our Mayan theme by meeting a real life modern Mayan! We will continue to learn about the history, customs and culture of the Mayans and how they came in to and out of power.

We will learn about what made the Mayan Civilisation great and how some of their customs influenced what we do today.

Challenge: What am I? How am I related to the Mayan theme?

Art/ Design and Technology: This half term, our art and design focus will be linked to our Mayan theme. It will also help us with our maths as we will explore symmetrical patterns and record our own using measurement and counting.

Maths: This half term we will be continuing sequences and writing formulae to describe them.

We will also be translating and reflecting shapes across all four coordinates. We will apply these skills to help us solve problems and challenges.

Science: During our science lessons this half term we will be organising, sorting and classifying living things according to their characteristics. We will apply scientific skills of research and observation in order to develop out understanding of how scientists group living things effectively.

Computing: Visits: As well as our Mayan visitor , we will also be taking part in some special days at Marsden Heights. On Thursday 14th January we will take part I an Expression Day and on Monday 1st February an Exploration Day. Both of these days will be exciting and fin packed opportunities to develop our skills across the curriculum.

This term, we will be using the computers to consolidate our learning from Maths and English. We will create sequences of code and patterns of repeating shapes.

Computers will continue to be used to support learning in all lessons.
