Carr Hill Sixth Form doesn’t design programmes to cater for thousands of students; we design our programmes around you. We’re large enough to cope with the demands of delivering challenging P16 programmes and providing high quality support for Sixth Form students, but we’re small enough to make sure that our programmes are designed specifically for you and that you get the all the support and encouragement you need. Your A-Level Programme

Your Sporting Elite Programme

Students study three (or four) A-Level subjects from our range of brand-new courses. With a range of curriculum enhancement opportunities, this programme provides the traditional Sixth Form experience with knowledge, understanding and skills to fully prepare students for university, apprenticeship or employment.

Students specialise in the sport of their choice and receive expert coaching and training as part of their timetable programme. Alongside this students can study a Diploma in Sport, traditional A-Levels or a Diploma from our brand new Suite.

Your Specialist Diploma Programme Students specialise in their chosen subject from our brand-new Diploma Suite. Students will spend the majority of their programme studying this subject with the option of selecting additional subjects or curriculum enhancement opportunities on offer.

We don’t design our programmes to cater for thousands of students.

We design our programmes around you.

Personalised

Because the class sizes are small my teachers were able to get to know me, my work style ,what I was good at, and what I needed to work on at the start of my courses. I found that this meant that my classes enabled me to progress really quickly.

There were times when it was really tough, but my teachers and the Sixth Form team were really supportive.

Studying A-Levels isn’t easy.

It’s not supposed to be easy I guess! My teachers were complete experts; they understood what I’d studied at GCSE and this made the transition to my Sixth Form courses much easier.

The Sixth Form isn’t huge.

There aren’t thousands of students. That’s what I loved about it. I quickly got to know my teachers and found new friends in the sixth form.

he Sixth Form Leadership Team will ensure that you get the very best experience during your Sixth Form Career. This team of specialist staff are always on hand to make sure that you have all the tools you need to make Sixth Form a success in class, on the sports field, or as part of your enhancement programme.

team of dedicated specialist mentors work with you to ensure that your making good progress and provide expert information, advice and guidance as you apply for university places, apprenticeships or employment. You’ll have a personal academic mentor who’ll support you throughout your Sixth Form Programme.

Your A-Levels

Study three (or four) A-Levels + Enhancement A-Levels are the traditional academic qualification for Sixth Form Students. For those students wishing to follow degree courses in traditional subjects our range of A-Level programmes will help you meet the entry requirements for these courses.

Most students will study three A-Level courses, with the option of studying a fourth A-Level subjects for some students.

Curriculum Enhancement programmes are designed to provide you with additional knowledge, understanding and skills to support university applications.

Three Brilliant A-Level Grades A Guide for Students

However, the decisions you make now will set you on a course that can be difficult to change, so it’s important to make the right subject choices at this early stage.

The minimum requirement even for the best universities is that you take three A-levels; these will be the basis of your offer. Some students choose to take on an additional Alevel subjects, giving them a total of four A-levels with which to apply to university. You won’t be at a disadvantage for only taking three; indeed, it’s better to take three and get brilliant results in all three than it is to take on more than you can handle and get worse results because of it. Only take on what you think you can realistically manage, and talk to your teachers about the workload you can expect from the subjects you think you might want to study.

Choose subjects you enjoy – you’ll do better in your studies if you have an interest in the subject!

Choose subjects in which you are predicted to get good GCSE grades – chances are you’ll do well in these subjects at A-level, too, earning you better grades.

Choose a range of subjects – both humanities and science subjects. This will give you the greatest choice when it comes to applying for university.

What type of subject?

Think about the transferrable skills demonstrated by different subject choices: Essay-based subjects to demonstrate analytical skills and critical thinking.

Science subjects demonstrate logic and familiarity with scientific principles.

Practical subjects demonstrate self-discipline and creative thinking.

It’s also worth thinking about the transferrable skills demonstrated by different subject choices.

Another source you might want to take into account when choosing your A-levels is the Russell Group’s list of socalled ‘facilitating subjects’ – particularly if you’re thinking of applying to a Russell Group university. The subjects are: Mathematics and Further Mathematics, English Literature, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Geography, History, Languages (Classical and Modern).

For example, taking Business Studies, Economics and Law will leave you well set for an Economics degree at most universities, but taking Mathematics, Geography and a language will be equally good preparation for an Economics degree while leaving a slew of other possibilities open to you, as well as being more respected by top universities.

These are the subjects that are most often required by top universities. It’s worth being clear it’s not an exhaustive list of ‘hard’ subjects, but instead it’s the case that picking options from this list will keep your options

Making the Final Decision

To help make your final decision, talk to the staff at Carr Hill Sixth Form and read the syllabus for each of the courses you’re potentially interested in. You could even pop to the library and take a look at some of the texts and course books you’d be expected to study. This will help you get a feel for what each subject is like, and should aid your decision-making process.

Your Sporting Elite

Expert Coaching & Training + Sporting Diploma + Your Choice of a range of other subjects + Enhancement The Sixth has four Sporting Elite Academies. The Football, Netball, Rugby and Dance Academies represent Carr Hill High School and Sixth Form Centre at a local, regional, national and international level.

Students who are members of these academies receive expert coaching and training to develop their skills as a sportsperson alongside their academic studies.

Football Academy

The Football Academy consists of two squads made up of 28 players from Years 11, 12 and 13. The first team and the development squad train 3:15-5:00pm every Monday and play most of their matches on Wednesday afternoons. Students in both squads have the use of the fitness suite in their spare time before, during and after school.

The players were also part of the Sports’ Tour to South Africa in summer 2014.

The players are coached by Mr. Grady and Mr. Doughty.

Netball Academy

Carr Hill’s Netball Academy consists of a squad of players from Years 11, 12 and 13. They train 3:15-5:00pm every Monday and play their matches on a Wednesday afternoon during period 5. They also have use of the school fitness suite.

The players are coached by former Manchester Thunder Super League player Mrs Carroll.

The Sixth Form provides this once in a lifetime opportunity to experience life in South Africa and allows students to demonstrate their sporting abilities in Rugby, Football, Netball and Dance.

Your Diploma

Study Your Choice of Diploma specialism + Your Choice of a range of other subjects + Enhancement Our Suite of Specialist Diplomas offers students the opportunity to study a key subject as part of their Sixth Form Programme and specialise in a particular aspect of the course.

Our Specialist Diploma is the equivalent to two A-Level subjects and attracts the same UCAS (university application) points. Students are also able to consider our Introductory Diploma course which is the equivalent to one A-Level and attracts UCAS points.

A Technical Choice Taking a vocational pathway

Our Diploma Courses are vocational qualifications and Level 3 for Sixth Form students.

They’re designed with the workplace in mind and provide a high-quality alternative to A Levels, with a great range of subjects to choose from.

Our Diploma Programmes give you the reassurance that you have the right course to support your lifelong learning journey.

Launching in September 2016, our Diploma Programme will allow you to achieve your potential and progress to the next stage of your life, whether it be Higher Education, an apprenticeship, or employment.

Our Diploma programmes will provide you with the knowledge and skills required for employment and for the community as a whole. It’s also about developing the behaviours and attributes needed to progress and succeed in education and in work.

Our courses allow for a high degree of flexibility with the choice of units that make up the qualifications, so you can specialise in the specific areas of the subject that interest you most.
