Rawmarsh Thorogate School Rawmarsh Thorogate School is a one form entry school with seven classes - starting with Foundation Stage 2 and finishing with Year 6.

This means there are places for 210 children currently we have 209 children in school.

The classrooms are of above average size and have an airy feel to them. The school is well resourced: enthusiastic and welcoming teachers, full time teaching assistants in every year group, each class has an Interactive Whiteboard and at least two PCs, a well stocked Infant and Junior Library, an up to date ICT Suite and out door facilities that engage both learning and sporting activities.

The family of Rawmarsh Schools work actively together to serve its community. Sporting events organised through the Schools Sports Partnership provide opportunities for the pupils to interact and take part in competitive sports. Teachers meet to moderate work and ensure best practices are being followed.

The majority of children transfer at the end of Year 6 to Rawmarsh Community School: A Sports College.

School Day Our Breakfast Club currently opens between 8:00 am and 8:45 am (the start of school).

This can be attended at a cost of £2 per day subject to availability.

In the interest of safety, we ask that children do not arrive on the premises before 8.45 a.m. unless they are attending breakfast club.

Registration will take place at 8.55 a.m. and the law requires us to mark children as “late” after registration has taken place. The number of times late has to be recorded on individual end of year reports.

Admissions Children usually join Thorogate School at 4 years old in our Foundation Stage 2 class (previously known as Reception). They join us from a range of settings, such as Rawmarsh Children’s Centre, Victoria Park Nursery and Granby. Admission to Thorogate School is via the Local Authority Schools Admissions school does not have a list and has no impact on admissions.

Family & Home Learning You are your child’s first educator, we need to work in partnership with you. In FS2, we aim to achieve this through:

Daily learning activities - you are encouraged to work with your child on activities set in class from arrival in class until approximately 9:00am if you are able to.

•

Stay and Play on Friday mornings where you have the extended opportunity to work with your child in class on activities until approximately 9:20 (followed by an opportunity to have a tea/coffee with other parents).

Curriculum Our curriculum is vibrant and exciting - it is a mixture of traditional topics with new ideas injected - we have maintained our Quality Mark Award for Numeracy & Literacy. We include enterprising opportunities for all age groups and have been awarded the Warwick University Gold Enterprise Award. The curriculum we offer supports our aims of achieving high standards, developing independence and fostering a love of learning that will lead to our pupils achieving their potential.

When appropriate, we enhance our curriculum through trips and visitors to school. To achieve these, we require parents to make a voluntary contribution. Where contributions are not sufficient to cover the cost, the trip / visitor may have to be cancelled.

Phonic Workshops (adult workshops where we explain how we teach reading and what you can do to support your child).

Reading Workshops (morning sessions where you work with your child on reading related activities).

Attendance We believe there is a very strong and direct link between attendance and achievement.

The Headteacher can only authorise absence for reasons of illness, medical appointments or exceptional circumstance.

Holidays during term time will only be authorised by the school in exceptional circumstances - where this is because of employer demands, a letter from the employer stating that you are not able to take holidays at other times will be required. Rotherham LA may issue fines for unauthorised absences.

Support them to undertake any activities suggested by their teacher during the course of the year.

Ensure they have all the sleep they need.

Talk to your child, taking an interest in what they are doing at school.

Discipline We encourage self-discipline in our pupils. There is an expectation that they will respect themselves and others and show good manners. Our discipline policy is based upon this principle and require parental support in achieving it. Through this shared respect, the pupils recognise their role in the learning process and develop independence - something we hold in high esteem. Where behaviour repeatedly falls below expected standards, we will seek to address it within a positive ethos. This may include the removal of privileges and in very serious cases temporary exclusion from school. Permanent exclusions are used as a last resort.

We believe it is a strength of the school that our pupils, reinforced by their parents and school staff, display positive behaviours that supports their social interaction and learning.

Uniform

SEBD Unit

The Governing body at Rawmarsh Thorogate School will respect variations to our school uniform if they are directly related to established religious or cultural traditions.

However, any variation will be dealt with on an individual basis and judgments will remain at the discretion of the Headteacher and the Governing Body. We also believe that school uniform prevents the inevitable loss of selfesteem caused to individual children should a family not be able or willing to provide the newest, most expensive or fashionable clothing and equipment.

The Rotherham provision for children with Social Educational Behaviour Difficulties is based at Thorogate School. This important provision is for children on role in primary schools across the authority - it is not a provision for the children attending Thorogate School. It is very successful in reintegrating pupils back into their own schools, thus enabling the pupils to work towards their full potential.

School colours are red and blue. Children are encouraged to wear:

• Red or blue sweatshirts, available with the school logo from school.

• White shirt or polo shirt.

• Grey or black trousers / shorts / skirts.

• Black, flat sensible, safe, shoes – no heels higher than 4cm inclusive of any platform.

• Gingham dresses – blue or red.

• A cap to protect from the sun.

Meals

• Trainers for outdoor games.

Thorogate School is fortunate to have a well run and efficient kitchen cooking school meals on site - parents are invited to sample a meal should they wish. Dinner money should be paid before the day of the meal, preferably on Mondays.

• Children should not wear jewelry to school.

• Stud earings may be worn but the child needs to be able to remove these for PE. Where they cannot be removed the child will not be able to take part in PE.

• Watches may be worn to school. However, they must be removed before any PE lessons. Please note that the school will be unable to take any responsibility ‰or any watches that are lost.

• No make up or nail varnish should be worn.

Packed lunches should be healthy in nature, reflecting Thorogate School’s Healthy School status. No chocolate or fizzy drinks are permitted.

We are all very proud of our children and the work we do to support their learning. This prospectus will have given you a flavour of what Rawmarsh Thorogate School represents.

However, we urge you to come and visit us during a school day so that you can experience us as we really are - this will give you the opportunity to decide if we are the right school for your child.

Rawmarsh Thorogate School serves a wide ranging population and has a high reputation for both academic and social achievement. We are a popular school and usually have classes of 30 pupils - we try not to go above this number to ensure that we maintain the high quality educational experience that we are known for.

We place great emphasis on both high standards of achievement and behaviour in the context of each individual child, thus ensuring that every child is able to achieve their potential.
