How to support your child’s learning at home

Homework

Please ensure that your child reads for at least 10 minutes every night, and records what they have read in their reading record.

Year 5 children are given learning log homework every Friday to be handed in the following week. It’s best to spread the work out through the week rather than do it all in one go.

It must be completed to an acceptable standard which means that it must be at least as good as the work children produce in class, and written tasks must be completed in blue pen.

There will usually be a maths task, spellings to learn and a Literacy or Creative Curriculum activity.

All year 5 children are expected to know their tables to 12x12 and associated division facts off by heart by now. Tables need to be practised regularly so they are not forgotten.

This is so important because rapid recall of tables means they will be able to apply the knowledge to more complex calculations.

Make sure you know your targets and are constantly striving to achieve them.

Mr Heseldon runs a drop in homework club on Monday and Tuesday lunchtimes for children who would like some help with their work.

We have super new journals full of helpful tips to support work at home. Please ensure that journals are signed and handed in each week.

Spring Term 1

English: In our English lessons we are exploring figurative language in poetry, and are generating similes, metaphors and personification. We will also create our own non-fiction leaflets persuading people to visit the local area.

Geography: Using Digimap and Google Maps to develop mapping skills will help us when we visit the area around Pendle Hill. We will learn how to read 6 figure grid references and how to understand a key.

Creative Curriculum: Ourselves – Pendlefolk Our creative curriculum theme is based on our local area and our familiar landmark – Pendle Hill. We will be combining music, art, computing, literacy and science lessons to create a celebration of our local environment.

Does your child know all their times tables facts?

We will be developing our numeracy skills this term by looking at negative numbers in context. We will also develop our place value knowledge further through solving a range of problems involving numbers with up to 3 decimal places. Children will also be able to apply their measuring and shape skills when thinking about the distance we will travel on our walk around Barley or possible shapes we may see whilst there.

Science: Living Things and their habitats We will be finding out about the life cycles of mammals, amphibians, birds and insects, as well as the way plants reproduce.

Art: in Art lessons we are learning to develop landscape compositions, inspired by the work of local artist Donald Holden. We will develop sketching and painting skills and use mixed media collage techniques to add texture.

Maths:

Visits and Visitors: This half term we will visit Barley and walk from the bottom of Pendle Hill to Aitken Wood and the sculpture trail.

Look out for a letter full of detail to help you prepare for the country walk.

Remember to wrap up warm!

Computing: Animation We will be creating stop motion animations of Pendle Hill, using ipad apps to edit images and will import our own sound recordings.

Safer Internet Day takes place this term so we will learn about eSafety.
