Studying within the Art and Design Department offers the experience of working with a creative and experienced staff team over a wide range of inspiring disciplines where outcomes are innovative and contemporary. Students can opt to for one or more Linear A Level choices such as Fine Art, Graphic Communications, Textile Design and Photography which complement and support other academic study or select either the more vocational Level 2 or Level 3 BTEC Diplomas. The department is housed both in the College’s Art and Media Centre and in specialist suites of studios purpose built for Three-Dimensional Design and Photography. Students working in the department have access to well-equipped, contemporary facilities, including state of the art Mac networks, specialist Textile facilities and large art studios.

Students progress from Art and Design onto a range of academic courses or further specialised study in an Art or Design discipline. Some students also progress internally to the Pre-Degree Art Foundation Diploma Year for students aged 18-19 preparing for HE application or employment in Art and Design.
Whichever course you choose, you’ll be able to explore a range of materials and techniques and you’ll be encouraged to significantly further develop skills that you learnt in school, as well as exploring approaches to challenging new concepts. You will be encouraged to push yourself to achieve more than you thought was possible.

The course aims to develop a broad range of practical art and design skills within specialist areas such as Fine Art, Graphic Design, Photography and Three-Dimensional Design. You will be introduced to a variety of media and techniques where you will have the opportunity to creatively explore a range of processes and specialist equipment. You will study the work of other artists and designers and, throughout the course have the opportunity to develop a portfolio for your chosen specialism.
There are a number of core and additional units that make up the course and enable you to specialise in specific areas such as Fine Art, Animation, 3D Crafts, Graphics, Photography, and Multi disciplinary work, therefore developing a more personal, creative portfolio of work.
You will experience a wide range of textile techniques and processes including stitch, dye, felt, embroidery and garment construction to develop understanding of shape, form, pattern, texture and colour. Students produce designs for fashion garments, which are worn at the end of year fashion show. Practical work will be based on a range of themes using the work of artists and designers to influence your own designs.
Year 1 Component 1 - Portfolio For this unit, students will provide a portfolio of work demonstrating a diverse range of technical skills and techniques in a variety of media. Students will initially be encouraged to explore media and techniques such as stitch, appliqué, felt making and mark making through a range of workshops. These initial practical explorations will then lead to a more sustained and focused project. The study of designers is an integral part of the course and students will learn to analyse and critically appraise the work of others as part of their project research. A fashion outcome will be produced with pattern cutting skills taught.
You will work in response to assignment briefs, where it is important to fulfil all the identified requirements; this may include, a time scale for completion of the work or producing work for a specific audience, purpose or environment. Towards the end of the course you will develop a final project in an area of your choice, which will form the basis of your final exhibition. This qualification is ideal for those students who wish to study a wide range of Art and Design disciplines students may progress from this course into to progress into a range of art and design disciplines at university from photography, fine art or graphics to interior or product design. Entry to the course will be supported and agreed over discussion of a portfolio of work supplied at interview.
The core units provide you with skills and knowledge that will develop your understanding of art and design processes. You will explore the work of professional artists and designers to influence your own ideas and to inspire your own work and development. In addition to the core units, you will also study specialist units that will develop your skills in a range of areas, which include: Fine Art and Photography: you will explore and develop a range of techniques (including drawing, painting and mixed media) in order to create your own artwork, and will develop an understanding of how art is used commercially. You will explore the use of digital imaging techniques that will enable you to develop work in a range of genres. 3D Crafts/Design: you will explore the use of a range of materials and techniques and develop an understanding through practical realisation of how these might be used to produce your own products, such as ceramics and sculptures. Graphic Design and Illustration: you will explore a range of techniques (including hand and computer generated designs using programmes such as Photoshop and Illustrator) in the production of advertisements and animation.
ASSESSMENT The course is assessed entirely through the completion of coursework assignments graded at pass, merit or distinction; there are no examinations. A variety of teaching methods and learning styles are used such as practical realisations, independent research, presentations, case studies, external speakers and field trips. Work is supported through access to high quality specialist facilities.
SPECIFIC ENTRY CRITERIA Grade C in GCSE English Language and grade C in a GCSE Art (includes: Art & Design, Textiles, Graphic Communications, Photography or Three Dimensional Design) or GCSE Design subject (Graphic Design, Product Design, Textile Design or Resistant Materials) or a Merit grade in a BTEC Level 2 Art and Design Diploma, Extended Certificate or Certificate.
The course consists of mainly practical coursework projects with a timed exam project at the end of each year, which students find similar to their experience in GCSE Art. All practical work is underpinned by critical analysis of appropriate sources. Students are encouraged to visit galleries and exhibitions in order to view artwork first hand.
FASHION SHOW At the end of each year you will be encouraged to participate in our spectacular showcase event where you will model your own garments down the catwalk.
Component 2 - Externally set assignment Students are issued with a list of topics set by the Examination Board and will choose one to be the topic of a sustained project. Students will develop a range of work, which concludes in an in-depth final piece,

Year 2 Component 1 - Personal investigation Students, in consultation with their tutor, will produce a self initiated project consisting of practical coursework and an essay of 1000 to 3000 words relating to their practical research. The topic for the project is broadly centred on fashion and is of a personal choice based on strengths and interests experienced at AS level. Advanced garment construction skills will be taught within the second year of study. Component 2 - Externally set assignment Students are issued with a list of topics set by the Examination Board and will choose one to be the topic of a sustained project. Students will develop a range of work, which concludes in an in- depth final piece, which will be constructed within the 15 hours under exam conditions, usually over 5 days.
ASSESSMENT Students are assessed continually throughout the course, where feedback provides the opportunity for students to improve work and subsequent grades. Final assessment is in May.
SPECIFIC ENTRY CRITERIA Grade C in GCSE English Language and either: grade C in a GCSE Art subject (includes: Art & Design, Textiles, Graphic Communications, Photography or Three Dimensional Design) or grade C in Design Technology: Textile Design. If students have not taken a GCSE Art subject or Textile Design, then a portfolio of work will be considered. Linear best 8 score of 40+.
