Welcome to Stockland Church of England Primary Academy Learning and Achieving Together We hope this prospectus will give you a good insight into the full and vibrant life of our Academy. We want our children to leave with a high standard of education, excellent inter-personal skills and a strong team and work ethic. We develop these principles within an inclusive environment and via innovative and creative teaching and curriculum models such as subject specific teaching from Year 2 - Year 6. The Academy strives to move children to a point of ‘mastery’ within core subjects by developing a deep understanding of core principles which can be applied in a range of contexts across a connected curriculum.

The use of co-operative group work with mixed ability is a key approach at Stockland Primary Academy and allows each child to fulfil their potential and speak confidently of their ideas and views within a dialogic approach. The use of manipulative's in Maths such as Cuisiniere rods allow deep understanding of number via an algebraic approach.

Sport and Physical Education is a huge strength and focus of the Academy and children participate in high quality PE lessons three times a week. On Wednesday afternoons older children compete against other schools in sports fixtures or receive sports coaching here at school. Younger children are also outside once a week taking part in Forest School based education.

Learning behaviour follows ‘Nine ways to shine’ developed with staff and children together and form a Diamond. This linked with school values of; Trust, Reflectiveness and stillness, Understanding, Serving, Talents combined with our commitment to teaching British values of; Democracy, importance of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs, means that our children are well prepared to succeed in Secondary school and in adult life.

Academy Performance The Academy had an Ofsted inspection in 2007 and received an outstanding report. In 2014 the school was recorded as being 48th in the Sunday Times league tables for results at Year6. In the last Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist School (SIAMS) in 2013 the school received a ‘Good’ grading.

Staff: Mr Perkins – Principal Joined the Academy in September 2014

Mr Perkins is the Principal at the Academy and so is responsible for the teaching and learning in the school, safeguarding and behaviour of children and is finance officer for the Academy. He teaches Literacy and Maths weekly in Class3 and 4. Mr Perkins also helps with the sports fixtures one afternoon a week.

Mrs Whitten – Literacy/Religious Education Mrs Whitten joined Stockland Primary in April 1999.

Mrs Whitten is the Literacy Specialist and is responsible for teaching literacy from Year 2 to Year 6. This includes the use of synthetic phonics, group reading and cooperative group work where the children develop their comprehension skills and learn how to write in different styles.

Religious Education: This specialist subject is taught from Year 2 to Year 6.

The children learn about Christianity and other religions. They also have the opportunity to reflect on their own beliefs and how we can work towards a culture of acceptance and tolerance.

Mrs Whitten is supported by a Teaching Assistant, Mrs Dewhust for Literacy.

Mrs Ainsworth – Maths/Art Mrs Ainsworth joined Stockland Primary in September 1999 and is the Numeracy Specialist.

She supports maths in Class 1 and teaches maths to all children from Year 2 to Year 6. Mrs Ainsworth teaches using Cuisenaire rods which give the children a hands on way to observe, investigate and learn mathematical concepts.

Mrs Ainsworth is supported by a Teaching Assistant, Mrs Williams.

Mrs Essex - Science/Design and Technology and Special Needs Mrs Essex joined Stockland Primary in September 2005 and teaches both of her specialist subjects from Year 2 to Year 6. Science is strong in the Academy and the children have the opportunity to take part in class discussions and perform experiments.

Design & Technology: The ability to work co-operatively in a group helps the children to complete group projects and use these skills when they are completing an individual assessment piece. The children have previously created textile photograph frames, 3-D items and CAM motors.

Mrs Hamilton – Reception/Year 1 Teacher Mrs Hamilton joined Stockland Primary in January 2004 and is responsible for the delivery of our Early Years Foundation Stage. She teaches literacy and synthetic phonics for both reception and year 1 as well as maths. In Year 1 the children are encouraged to work co-operatively with a partner. Learning ‘Labs’ are used whereby the children learn through play and hands-on activities.

Mrs Hamilton is assisted by Mrs Deam, full time HLTA and part-time Teaching Assistants, Mrs Bartlett and Miss Chatting.

Miss Edwards – Humanities/Physical Education Miss Edwards joined Stockland Primary in September 2005 and teaches Geography, History and French from Year 2 to Year 6.

She also teaches P.E. from Reception to Year 6.

Broad and Balanced Curriculum Art Art is highly valued within the Academy. Evidence of the high standard achieved by the children can be seen throughout the school. A number of children have completed and passed the Visual Aptitude test at Woodroffe for their secondary school place.

Music: ​ All of the children from Year 2 learn to play the recorder and as a result learn how to read music and move on to use other percussion instruments. The children get such a strong start that the majority of them go on to learn additional instruments such as the cornet, clarinet, flute, violin, guitar and keyboard. We are very fortunate to have a number of external music tutors come to the Academy to teach the children.

Literacy and Maths​ : The Academy has very high academic standards in Literacy. and Maths In 2013 100% of the children achieved Level 4 and above in Key Stage 2 SATS which makes us one of the highest performing academies in the country.

Sport​ : Sport is a very important part of the children’s time at the Academy. We firmly believe that if the children are active and fit this very much helps with their concentration and academic achievement. The children participate in many sports events including Cricket tournaments and local community activities. We also host approximately 20 schools within the local area for Cross

Country events each year and the Year 4-6 children participate in regular interschool sports fixtures.

Our sports fixtures are supported by our excellent sports coaches Miss Chatting and Mr Murnane.

Mr Perkins and Mrs Dewhurst also often attend / assist with the sports fixtures.

Forest School​ : In Year 1, 2 and 3 the children participate in a weekly Forest School where they have the opportunity to explore the environment and take part in various outdoor activities such as creating natural art, bug hunting, building bug homes and many other interesting outdoor pursuits.

Drama​ : The children take part in performances which in recent years have included: The Jolly Postman, Hiawatha and Ramayana. In addition, every child in the Academy takes part in our Christmas production.

After Academy Activities: The Academy offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities and clubs such as gardening, cookery, craft, music, science, languages, dance, netball, hockey and many other sporting activities.

Trips and Year 5/6 Residential​ : The children all participate in at least one off site school trip each year. These have previously included trips to Plymouth Aquarium, AtBristol, Pennywell Farm, Escot Country Park, Offwell Woods and Crealy Adventure Park.

The Year 5 and 6 children all attend a one week residential trip to Pixie’s Holt where they learn valuable team building skills and participate in many exciting outdoor activities.

Working Together - Mixed Ability Groups: All the children work in mixed ability groups. We believe this teaches the children to respect each others’ talents, avoids labelling and prepares them for the future. We want all the children to achieve and strive for high standards.

Prefects: All the Year 6 children become prefects and play a vital role in supporting, encouraging and playing with the younger children at break times and whole academy events. This and the house system are very important elements of the academy.

School Council: Children from Y4 to Y6 are elected each year on to the School Council. Meetings are held on Thursdays during lunchtime and Assembly time. The School Council feeds back to the Principal and decides how certain initiatives should be implemented etc.

Play Leaders: Playleaders are volunteers for Y4 nd Y5 who facilitate games and activities on the playground and school pitch for younger children while the prefects patrol areas. Each term different children can volunteer and the work together to offer traditional playground games to using a parachute for team work activities.

PTFA​ : We work in close partnership with our PTFA and we are very lucky to have an active group who work tremendously hard to raise funds for the Academy. Stockland and Yarcombe Pre-School​ : We work very closely with the Outstanding pre-school which is based in the Stockland Village Hall, approximately 50 yards from the Academy. There are regular pre-school visits to the Academy, especially in the term before the children start full time education.

Our Collective Worship takes place each day after lunchtime at the school. Children and teachers gather together for a song, bible story or story based on the theme of the week and prayers. The Vicar visits the school on a regular basis to take the worship. The Academy uses the ‘Values for Life’ assembly programme recommended by the Diocesan.

Many of the children also attend the Family Services at the church in Stockland or in their own villages and are actively involved in reading prayers and helping with the collection. Each year our Harvest Festival and Christmas Production take place in the church.
