Unit Three Kasper in the Glitter

This term we will be reading the fantastic novel by Philip Ridley “Kasper in the Glitter”. All our work will be linked to this exciting novel and will cover specific elements of the National Curriculum.

The following offers brief details of the theme which the children will be exploring during the Spring Term.

Using English Using the Kasper in the Glitter story we will help the children to understand how characters are presented and how authors use specific features of language to evoke mood and bring story settings alive.

Using Mathematics As mathematicians we will continue to develop different mathematical skills and apply these to reasoning and problem solving. In geography we will use the 8 points of the compass and grid referencing.  As geographers we will locate and describe different locations using maps and globes. We will research how locations around the world are changing and why.  As artists we will study the work of Piet Mondrian and create our own paintings in the style of Mondrian. Later we will apply our knowledge to create costumes for the characters of our novel.  As scientists we will investigate electrical circuits and switches and then use our knowledge to create a burglar alarm for a character in the novel. We will also deepen our understanding of different forces.  As designers we will use our scientific knowledge to design, make and evaluate a pop-up book and a toy using cams.  As computer scientists we will use graphic modelling to design buildings and settlements. We will use the scratch program to develop our coding skills.

 In RE we will be learning about charity in different faiths.  In PSHCE we will learn about how to deal with change and loss. We will learn about the importance of empathy.  As musicians we will plan and perform music to describe the contrasting settings in Kasper in the Glitter. We will also write lyrics for songs.

HOW PARENTS CAN HELP THEIR CHILDREN AT HOME WITH THE WORK OF THIS THEME

The School Drivers At Shawclough we have carefully considered which skills will be needed by our children to make sure that they become effective learners now and in their future. Throughout our curriculum we will encourage children to ‘learn how to learn’ by becoming independent learners, team workers, reflective learners, creative thinkers and self-managers through a variety of activities.

Check your child’s homework diary is filled in 5 times and signed each week.

Practise their multiplication tables regularly using their new cards.
