END OF YEAR TESTS Homework

Your child has their assessments in English and Maths during the week of 7th December.

This is an important assessment point, where children and teachers will find out how successfully they have started this year.

Make sure they know their targets and work towards meeting them.

You should know all the tables to 12x12 and the related division facts. Use magic facts to work out new ones. e.g. 6x4 = 24, so 0.6x4= 2.4, 60x4 = 240 ‌

Year 5 children are given learning log homework every Friday to be handed in the following week. It’s best to spread the work out through the week rather than do it all in one go. It must be completed to an acceptable standard.

There will usually be a maths task, spellings to learn and a Literacy or Creative Curriculum activity.

Mr Smith runs a drop in homework club on Tuesday and Wednesday lunchtimes for children who would like some help with their work.

Autumn Term 2

Creative Curriculum: English: We have just completed a 2-week unit exploring and writing magazine articles.

Children have been given the opportunity to investigate the similarities and differences between newspapers and magazines, before exploring magazines in more detail. The children have used this information and their research on ‘Outer Space’ to create their own page out of a magazine. We are now beginning our unit of work studying the novel The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, linked to our whole school theme of Diversity.

Closely linked to our topic, we will be investigating the question ‘Is There Anybody Out There?’. We will be exploring how advances in technology have allowed space travel and communication to rapidly become a reality since the time of World War 2.

Challenge: Who am I? How am I related to the theme Diversity?

What makes me an important figure in world history?

Art/ Design and Technology: This half term, our art and design focus will be linked to our space topic. Children will have the chance to use a variety of media to create some stunning solar scenes and planets.

Maths: We will be developing our mathematical skills involving fractions, time, multiplying and dividing. We will use a range of strategies to apply what we learn to solving real-life problems.

Science: We are using our topic to help us find out more about the earth, sun and moon. We will be exploring what causes the phenomenon of day and night, and the phases of the moon. Drawing on prior knowledge, the children will also be able to describe the shape and size of the earth, sun and moon, and comment on how far apart they are in space.

Computing: Visits: We have already been fortunate enough to have visited Jodrell Bank, a world famous radio telescope in Cheshire, where we learned lots of fantastic facts about space communication. This term, we will also be participating in transition events at Marsden Heights, as well as making our half termly visit to Victoria Park.
