October 2015 This term’s newsletter gives you a flavour of the many different activities in which our young people have been involved. We are proud of their many varied achievements.

It has been a delight to see how quickly and how well our Year 7 students have settled in to Rye College life. They have been very well supported by our older students.

We welcome many new staff too this term who bring additional skills and expertise to our teams.

It has been a very busy term, with considerable change.

Head Boy and Head Girl Attend British Empire Medal Ceremony On behalf of Her Majesty The Queen, the LordLieutenant presented British Empire Medals at an investiture at Rye Town Hall which was kindly hosted by Mayor of Rye, Councillor Berni Fiddimore.

Sam Macleod (Head Boy) and Elizabeth Emson (Head Girl) were honoured and delighted to be invited to attend the ceremony. It was an opportunity for them and other guests to congratulate the medallists on their richly deserved award and show what can be achieved when you commit to helping others in the local community.

I am grateful to all of our College community for their support and commitment throughout this term and look forward to all that will be achieved together in the year ahead.

Year 7 Service of Dedication Thank you to parents and members of the community who attended the Year 7 Service of Dedication at St Mary’s Church (Rye) on Thursday 15th October. Thank you, also, to Canon David Frost and his team for their continued support of our young people.

A Special Thank You to Jo Kirkham MBE Rye College recently showed its appreciation of the longstanding service that Councillor Jo Kirkham MBE has given as a governor. A local historian, Jo has written many books about Rye’s history and donates the profits of these sales to the College for the purchase of library books. In 2008, she published a history of our school. Jo will continue to chair The Foundation Governors, who support the school by granting funds for improvement or projects of for individual students to pursue a special interest. Ann Cockerham said “We are privileged to work with Jo Kirkham. She was awarded the MBE for services to Rye and I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this honour. Jo’s commitment, support, energy and enthusiasm make a difference to our work and mean a great deal to our staff and students.”

Wellbeck College Presentation On Thursday 22nd October we were lucky to have Luke Cooper, an inspirational ex-student come into Rye College to speak to st ud en t s ab o ut Wellbeck College.

This is a prestigious Defence College who produce officers and civilians for the British Armed Forces. Luke spoke about the application process, moving away, College life, the amazing opportunities he has, and his plans for the future. He also showed us some fantastic photographs of various events and activities he has taken part in.

Students then participated in a question and answer session to find out more information. We are very grateful for Luke’s time and effort, and would like to wish him the best of luck for the future.

Talent Show Success Congratulations goes to Molly Salmon in Year 9, who recently achieved first prize in a talent contest at Winchelsea Sands Holiday Park. Molly wowed the four judges, including Tina Barrett from the pop group S Club 7, with a rendition of Make You Feel My Love by Adele. Molly not only received a trophy and certificate but also scooped the £150.00 cash prize! Molly would like to thank her singing teacher, Anneliese Dale, for her support and encouragement.

Adult Education The Rye Academy Trust are pleased to announce the continuation of Adult Education this year. All classes run on Wednesdays at Rye College.

Rye College Hosts the Annual Rye Primary Schools Cross Country The annual Rye Area Primary Schools Cross Country Championships, organised and hosted by Rye College Sports Ambassadors, under the guidance of School Sport Co-ordinator John Lovell, took place on Wednesday 14th October 2015. 8 Partner Primary Schools were represented and an excellent turnout of 145 pupils contested the races. Medals were awarded by guest Great Britain Heptathlete Elise Lovell.

The event was a Sainsbury’s School Games Level 2 Championships with the 15 best runners in the Year - 3 & 4 and 5 & 6 - age groups qualifying to represent the Rye Area against children from other Hastings and Rother School Games Partnership primary schools, at the ‘Hastings and Rother School Sports Partnership Championships’ to be held on Wednesday 18th November 2015 at ARK William Parker. Results are as follows: Winners of the team events were: Year 3 and 4 Boys Brede Year 3 and 4 Girls Icklesham Year 5 and 6 Boys Icklesham Year 5 & 6 Girls Rye Overall winning school: Icklesham

Rye College Open Evening 2015 Hundreds of prospective parents and pupils visited Rye College for their annual Open Evening on Thursday 1st October. Families were free to wander or be given a guided tour by Rye College Student Ambassadors, taking in all the sights and sounds of what Rye College has to offer.
