Performing Arts Showcase Rye College GCSE Performing Arts students are celebrating high grades for their recent Showcase Performance. Thirteen of the students gained full marks - A*s for their highly imaginative response to the exam brief of Into The Beyond. The students created a promenade performance around the college site that incorporated monologues about the solar system, songs, piano pieces and the Wurlitzer organ. The students performed a mask piece in role as aliens accompanied by a solo flute performer wearing a half mask and an original play exploring the dangers of the internet. Sarah Wall, Head of Drama, would like to thank Entertainment Workshops who supported the performance by creating atmospheric lighting and to congratulate the following students: Rose Akerman, Samuel Hughes, Eve Killelay, Joe Maylam, Esther Seal, Edward Batntock, Sofia Cox, Holly Eldridge, India Harlott, Holly Holt, Thomas Pickering, Isobel Riggs and Jodie Ryding.

Young Enterprise Wins Best Marketing Award This year Rye College entered the Young Enterprise Company Program, a local and then national event. A selected group of year 10 volunteers gathered to share their ideas in October 2014. These meetings produced a company to be known as 'SOUL'. The young people decided to produce Tie -dye socks, the strap line "top of the socks" was born. This led to a domain name, a Twitter site and business cards. Holly Eldridge and Izzy Riggs presented the company at the Sussex Exchange Centre in front of a panel of judges from local business. Despite the event taking place on the year 10 parents evening, a hurried group returned to school on time. It wasn't until later that evening, Ian Noble from the Best of Hastings, business adviser for the young people communicated that in their absence, they had won the Marketing Award for Rother and Hastings area. We have an award cup to prove it!

Choir Perform at Strand Court

On St. George’s Day, an ensemble from the college attended Strand Court to celebrate a very special ninetieth birthday party. Pupils from all years sang songs to a very appreciative audience and then everyone enjoyed light refreshments and birthday cake. All the students were asked if they would return and perform again in the near future and, of course, they were delighted to accept.

TV Taster Day at Brighton University In April a group of Year 9s and 10s attended a TV Taster Day at Brighton University in Hastings. The students had to produce a quiz show from start to finish. They compiled all the questions and took it in turns to try out the job roles, from being the Director, Producer, Floor Manager, Sound Engineer, operating the three cameras and managing the Autocue to being the contestants and the questions master.

The students enjoyed the experience and learnt a great deal about the background work involved in producing a show.

Congratulations to Miss Westbrook and Globe students who have organised a raffle on behalf of Macmillan Cancer Support. The draw will be held on 22nd May with prizes including free entry to Diggerland, cream tea for 2 at The George in Rye, 2 boxes of Dairy Box chocolates and a day return, car plus 9 passenger’s from Dover to Calais. The total amount raised as well as winners will be announced next term.

Sports Ambassador Activities

Indoor Cricket

Our team of Sports Ambassadors have excelled this term in providing a wide range of competitive opportunities for the children from our Rye partner primary schools. Highlights have included the hosting of badminton, netball and multi-skills festivals. The largest event the annual Multi Skills Festival, at Rye Sports Centre, on Wednesday 11th March 2015 offering a series of physical challenges for 160 year 2 pupils.

Festival activities were organised by our Sports Ambassadors with Year 7 Sports Leaders acting as activity station officials. Moving from the seven schools rotated around 11 activities that tested their generic sporting skills of, Moving, Aiming, Co-ordination and Balance, in order to achieve target scores, leading to the award of individual bronze, silver and gold, multiskill certificates. The morning was a great success with all pupils and students learning a variety of new skills.

The college Under 13 and Under 15 indoor cricket teams have participated in the East Sussex School’s Indoor Cricket Championships this term. Our U15 team ending up at East Sussex runners up to a very strong Hailsham CC Cricket Academy in a closely contested 3 match series. The U13’s coming third in their 8 school competition.

PE Kit Many parents have been asking the PE Department why the change from purple and grey to the new colours of red, black and white was made.

The decision was made to honour the traditional sporting colours of Rye which are red and black. We would also like to use this opportunity to notify parents that from September, students must wear this kit which can be bought online or in-store from SuperStitch86. www.superstitch86.co.uk
