BISHOP MARTIN CE PRIMARY SCHOOL ASSESSMENT, RECORDING and REPORTING POLICY 2015-16 Assessment Leader/Deputy Headteacher: Mr IJ McDonald (01695) 724046 (ext. 211) In line with the aims and principles of the school’s Mission Statement, we believe at Bishop Martin CE Primary School that: “Assessment should be focussed on establishing whether a child has secure and deep understanding of particular ideas appropriate to them at that stage of their learning” (Professor Tim Oates, Sept 2014) “The teachers’ assessment of the pupils’ work can be considered effective when • Assessment is an integral part of planning, teaching and learning; the teachers use suitable forms of assessment, based on expectations which are clear, realistic and understood by the pupils. • The pupils’ written work is regularly and consistently marked in ways that highlight the strengths and shortcomings, using approaches that are well understood by pupils and their parents. • The level and nature of the pupils’ prior attainments influence the selection and use of teaching methods and subject content; the pupils’ strengths are consolidated and their weaknesses are addressed. (Evaluating Schools DENI (Department for Education in Northern Ireland)) In light of these principles, Assessment, Recording and Reporting procedures at our school have a very simple aim: To measure progress and attainment of every pupil, regardless of ability and as a result, drive up achievement.
