Enrich Celebrating Achievement

Participation in the ‘Enrich’ Programme at SSFC is an important and valuable part of the student experience.

The activities are wide and varied and many run by students. They range from Amnesty International to the Student Magazine ‘Sixth Sense’, taking in debating, improv and astronomy on the way.

This flier gives just some of the enrichment opportunities available.

Each year students develop more.

This is more than an awards event, it’s an opportunity for students to showcase their work, highlight their talents and share their achievements with a wider audience.

Last year’s event included musical performances, short films, presentations about enterprise, science and community involvement.

Music and Dramatic Arts (MaDA) @ SSFC Be part of the Music and Dramatic Arts Programme and experience the college community at its most inspired, creative, innovative and exciting.

There are many opportunities throughout the college year to be involved either as an individual performer or as part of an ensemble, band, chamber group, choir, cast, crew, tech team or club.

Just to give you a flavour of what MaDA does, our 2015-2016 season included events such as two concerts, an innovative production of CABARET !, Celebrating Achievement Evening, a Bands Night, and Comp/Week (series of events for young composers). We had such groups as an improvised drama club, Voci Forti (audition only choir), a college choir, concert band, orchestra, big band, four rock bands, a jazz combo, string quartet, dance workshops with Arcadian Youth Dance, amongst many others.

Instrumentalists interested in performing in any of our main ensembles should sign up to our unique ‘music activities’ course.

This involves a Tuesday afternoon set aside for rehearsals and jamming!

We are very excited to announce that in addition to our two concerts (in December and May), we will be putting on a production of Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s classic musical EVITA on March 23rd – 26th 2016. Tickets for the show will be available from the box office on our website. Look out for news about this and other events on social media.

Enrich Student Council

Student Council is the democratically elected student body, with one rep from each tutor group. It is led by a team of student officers, lead by two Student Presidents. It is the main forum for Students and the College Leaders and Governors to discuss matters and make key decisions.

Council meets formally twice every half term, organises social events and raises thousands of pounds for charity.

Team Sports The college provides excellent opportunities for students to be selected for college teams which are led by experienced and qualified sports coaches. There are currently boy and girls football and hockey teams; a rugby team and netball teams playing weekly fixtures. This allows students to represent the college in their chosen sport both in the British College of Sport (BCS) and County leagues, cup and tournament competitons.

There may also be opportunities for some basketball, rounders and cricket fixtures during the year.

After College Activities* We offer clubs such as Basketball, Zumba, Netball, Badminton as we have access to our own Sports Hall. We also have an Archery Club off-site.

Recreational Water Sports* The college has created links with The Pengwern Boat Club and Drummond Outdoor to offer 12 week courses in rowing and canoeing taking place on Wednesday afternoons.

Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme* This is a timetabled lesson once a week to enable students to plan, assess and discuss their routes together in groups with experienced course leaders.Training expeditions and the assessed expeditions will take place over certain weekends.

You can join this award scheme without having completed the Bronze or Silver Awards. *There is a charge for after college activities, recreational water sports and D of E.

The college encourages students to be active and will sign post them to local clubs.

Extend Curriculum Enrichment

The ‘Extend’ Programme is designed to allow students to gain more qualifications, experience activities to support their work or university applications and to provide opportunities, outside the classroom, to pursue new interests.

Within curriculum areas, there are numerous opportunities to go on trips, visits or events all of which are designed to enhance students experience and knowledge of the relevant subject If you are able to support the ‘Enrich & Extend’ programme at SSFC in any way please contact Principal Martin Ward.

Students can participate in numerous subject extension activities such as Maths and Physics Olympaids, Chemistry Analaytical competition, Year in Industry and Engineering Education Scheme.

Some students have attended subject holiday programmes at universities and Villiers Park.

Additional Qualifications Extended Project enables students to research a subject that interests them and create a product such as a computer game or artwork or undertake a community or business venture. The student takes ownership of the work, supported by a member of staff in a weekly lesson.

Critical Thinking is particularly useful for students who are interested in applying to highly competitive universities or courses.

Both courses help you develop skills that are essential for higher education as well as for many careers ~ organisation, extended writing, research and evaluation and promotes qualities such as confidence and independence.

Careers & Progression Preparing students for their next stage starts early at SSFC. There are numerous progression events throughout the year such as the HE Fair held at college in December where students speak with universities from all over the country and attend workshops.

This is followed by a Progression evening in the spring term where students meet with local and national employers and find out about employment opportunities such as apprenticeships and internships as well as careers specific HE courses.

We have an extensive targeted progression careers programme which encourages and supports students in their applications for places at the highest ranked universities and on very competitive courses by providing specialist advice and enrichment opportunities for example for Oxbridge and Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Nursing and Midwifery, Physiotherapy, Architecture, Journalism and Primary Teaching applicants.

Students can sign up to a variety of courses, seminars and events that are run through the college year. For example students have had the opportunity to attend a BSL sign language course and the Real Apprentice Event. Extensive information is available via Moodle on volunteering and employment opportunities whilst at college such as the National Citizen service.
