What qualification will I get? BTEC Extended Certificate – Animal Care Course outline The course is vocational so involves a lot of practical work in order for students to access a range of hands-on experiences. Students visit the Zoo and Penny Farm, as well as spending a week in an animal placement on Work Experience. Students study animal accommodation, animal feeding, animal health and welfare issues, and also investigate how animal establishments operate. The two main areas of study in Year 11 focus on the health and welfare of animals and how this links to animal care, and legislation around animals in the world of work. For health and welfare students need to understand common diseases and disorders and their prevention and treatment, as well as the principles of animal First Aid. For legislation students need to understand the principles and practices of various animal establishments through a range of visits, outside speakers and independent research. How it’s assessed Students complete 4 units of course-work which are internally assessed and externally moderated. Each of the 4 units studied involve some practical element so photographic evidence and Witness Statements are included in the assessment process. What can this course lead to? Many students opting for this course go on to study at Myerscough College following courses in Animal Management, Veterinary Nursing or Equine Studies. This course is a Level 2 course (equivalent to 2 GCSEs) and wider knowledge at this level can be acquired or students can progress to Level 3 and gain qualifications equivalent to A Level standard.
