Simple activities to do with your child’s books.

Reading Please take the time to read with your child at every opportunity. This can be a bedtime story, a magazine, menu, leaflet, sign post,information book or sport’s program.

Please make sure that your child SEES you reading too.

This models reading for them and shows them it has a purpose, for example; instructions, recipes, labels, TV times, information on the TV screen, adverts, shop signs, magazines, newspapers and books.

Visit the library. Books can be very expensive but the local libraries have a wide range of books and activities for you to access free of charge. Please take advantage of this service.

ALL reading is valuable and has a purpose. It is one of the most valuable and important skills that we can teach our children.

Developing Reading Letter skills To develop their reading skills, children need to be able:  to match pictures  to match shapes  to match letters  to spot the differences between letters, e.g b p d  to know that letters can be written in a different size, colour or font, and at a different angle and will still be the same letter, e.g. s s s s to remember the shapes of the letters to make the letter shapes to match pictures to their initial sound to be able to say the sounds of the letters to hear the difference between the different sounds  to be able to hear rhyming words  to blend sounds together c-a-t     

 to complete phoneme substitution activities; for example, take ‘c’ off cat and add ‘m'

Reading Book Activities These activities can be done with the minimum amount of preparation.

They are all activities which will help young children develop their reading skills.

Play I-spy.

 ‘I-spy with my little eye something red’  ‘I spy with my little eye something you can play with…’  ‘I spy with my little eye something to eat…’  ‘I spy with my little eye something beginning with…’  ‘I spy with my little eye something which rhymes with…’

Scan or photocopy a page of the book.

Encouraging a left to right movement, ask the child to:  Find every ‘t’

 Find all the capital letters  Find all the words which say ‘the’  Cut up the photocopied picture into squares and make into a

jigsaw

 Cut up the photocopied picture in to squares. Choose one

square ask the child to match it to the correct part of the picture in the book.

Choose high frequency words or letters from the text. Make two sets of each word or letter. (about 6 for 4 and 5 year olds) Play Snap Play Pairs Play Bingo

Memory Game Say 2 things you can see in the picture. Child has to repeat in the same order. Increase number of things to be remembered.

Put 2 letters down. Let child look at them for 10 seconds. Mix them up and ask him to put them back in the order he saw them.

Increase number of letters to be remembered.

Write letters or high frequency words in different colours, sizes and fonts.

Put all the letters which say ‘s’ together.

Put all the words which say ‘what’ together.

Put all the words which start with ‘ch’ together.

Write the words in 2 rows down the page and ask the children to match them.

Ask children to find the letter or word which is the same as the first one. Draw a circle round it.

Play Noughts and Crosses.

Instead of o and x, the children write in the letters or words they are learning.

Make a pile of 9 letters or words. Draw the noughts and crosses board. Take it in turns to choose a letter or word, say it and write it on the board. First one to get three in row wins.
