Reydon Primary School - Year 4 Autumn Term 1 2015
Dear Parents/Carers, Well, another year starts and I’m really looking forward to working with the students again. We’ve already started to work hard, with a number already hitting an end of year target in maths! This progress is built on all the hard work and effort from last year. I’m sure with the same resilience, reflection, relationships, resourcefulness and risk taking this year, there will be even more good progress made over the coming terms. Personally, I can’t wait!
Curriculum outline We are going to be learning as much as possible through this term’s Science based Topic of ‘Food Glorious Food!’ We will also be studying: Maths: Addition and subtraction, perimeter & area, coordinates and multiplication & division. English: Non-fiction information texts and stories in a historical session. Science: The human digestive system, food chains and teeth. D.T. --- Balanced diets. P.E.--- Invasion games. Computing—Cyber-Smart, (e-safety). Geography -- Europe. History – Mayan & British history.
Notes: Please see the Year4 objectives that were handed out in July to keep up to date with this year’s expectations. On Tuesday 15th September (tbc) we are hoping to visit Carlton Marshes to learn about food chains and begin to look at compass use and direction finding in a practical session on beginner’s orienteering. A letter will be included with homework on Wednesday. We are concentrating on getting our presentation correct over the first few weeks, this includes daily handwriting practise in place of guided reading for the first full week so that our penmanship is at the level required. Homework will include letter formation practice for most students. We aim to move from pre-cursive to cursive handwriting using standard joins.
General class reminders Homework - Homework will continue to be given out on a Wednesday and will include English, Maths and tasks relating to Topic work. Reading at Home – The pupils should still be reading at home every evening to further their understanding and comprehension of a text. Spelling test - Spelling tests will be held on Mondays and will follow the National Curriculum spellings for Year 4. Those unable to meet the required mark (60%) will be expected to repeat the spellings the following week. P.E. – Please remember that the school kit is a white polo shirt, black shorts/skirt, socks and trainers. We plan to use Wednesdays as an indoor session, and Friday afternoon as the outdoor session, weather permitting. Times Tables – This year all students should be able to recall facts for all 12 tables to 12 x 12. Even when you think your child can do this, please keep practising. When secure, we will move on to related division facts, e.g. If 12 x 6 = 72 then 72 ÷ 6 = 12 and … If 6 x 12 = 72 then 72 ÷ 12 = 6.
Thank you for your co-operation and support, it is greatly appreciated. If you have any queries, or would like to come in and share any expertise with us, please do not hesitate to speak to either of us before or after school. Mr Patterson and Mrs Rose.
