Year Six Autumn Term 1 2015 Dear Parents, We hope that you all had a lovely summer holiday! We are very excited to be situated in our new classroom and to begin our new learning journey in Year Six. This week has been busy and the children have risen to their new roles as Year Six pupils. They are setting a fantastic example for younger students with their positive behaviour, both outside and inside as they learn, and I am really proud of them!
Events this half term: We are having a visitor in Monday, 7th September, to showcase a fossil collection as an introduction to our Topic. There will also be a Book Fair from September 16th-September 23rd, so keep your eyes peeled for more information.
Curriculum outline The children will be learning about a wide range of topics across this term. These include: Reading: This term we will be reading “War Horse” by Michael Morpurgo. The children will have a chance to explore the emotional journey with Joey through the text, and improve their inference skills and extend their writing with various tasks based on the novel. Maths: We are focusing on a variety of topics this term, such as negative numbers, calculation, measurement, and ratio and proportion. Writing: We will be continuing Big Write this year, and we will be covering a variety of writing styles linked to our War Horse unit. We will be looking closely at recounts this term. Topic- Our topic for this term is “From Dinosaurs to Darwin”, and the students are very eager to get started. We will be looking at this topic across History and Science, including fossils and how they are formed, a timeline of Dinosaurs’ existence on Earth, and Darwin’s theory of evolution. If your child has anything at home they would like to bring in for our Topic display table, please feel free to send it in. If it can be labelled with your child’s name, it would be helpful for when we send things home at the end of this term.
General class reminders Homework - Homework will continue to be given out weekly and will have a variety of choices, including Maths, English, Topic and Art. Reading at Home – The pupils should be reading at home every evening to further their understanding and comprehension of a text. P.E. Kits- P.E. will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays this term, so please remember to have your P.E. kit with you on those days. Please also remember that hair needs to be tied back, and any earrings or jewellery need to be taken off (or taped over if earrings can’t come out). This is for everyone’s safety.
Walking/Cycling to or from School We understand that multiple students in the class live close enough to walk or cycle home on their own from school; this is great for independence and they are now getting to an age where they are old enough to manage this on their own. If your child will be doing this, please could you write a note in their Home/School book, just so that we have a clear indication of which students are able to do so. This is to ensure all the children are safe. Thank you for your cooperation.
Thank you for your co-operation. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to speak to me after school. Miss Prindible and Mrs. Cooke
