Year 2 Autumn Term 1 2015 Dear Parents, We hope you all had a great Summer holidays! I am delighted to be teaching your children again this year and am looking forward to seeing them progress and grow over the course of the year. Year 2 is an important year for the children with SATS taking plac e in the summer term. Therefore we will be working very hard all year to support and encourage the children to learn to the best of their abilities. Events this half term: This half term our topic is Superheroes with a strong science link to materials. I am looking forward to teaching this exciting topic and know the children will have a lot of fun! We will be having a Superhero dress -up day (date tbc) so feel free to begin making a superhero costume!
Curric ulum o ut line Throughout the Superheroes topic the children will be learning about different types of materials and their properties. We will be designing and making our own superhero capes, deciding which materials would be best for the job. We will then test our capes to see how well they hold up in the everyday life of a superhero! As well as this we will be exploring and creating super vehicles, super lairs and looking at pop art created by Andy Warhol. Many curriculum areas will be covered through this topic, including, History, Art, DT and Music. The other curriculum areas covered are below: Maths – number and place value, addition and subtraction, shape and fractions. English- stories with familiar settings. History- famous superheroes.
PE This half term we will be having PE on a Thursday afternoon. Please make sure children have their PE kits on a Thursday morning and any piercings are covered or taken out.
General class reminders Homework - Homework will continue to be given out weekly on a Wednesday. The children then need to hand it i n on a Monday to be marked a nd the next homework will be added. Homework will be Engl ish, Maths, and half termly topic work. Reading at Home – The pupils should s till be rea ding at home every evening to further their understanding and comprehension of a text (this does not need to be the whole book). Pl ease sign your chi l d’s diary when you have listened to them rea d. This year the children will be given a bookmark where they ca n collect a sticker a fter every 10 rea ds at home. Once they fill their bookmark they ca n choose a prize from the trea s ure chest! If you do not sign your child’s diary then their reading a t home cannot be rewarded. Tha nk you. Changing reading books- Thi s year i t has been deci ded that the children will be responsible for cha nging their reading book. Therefore they need to put their book bag i nto the ‘change’ box at the begi nning of the day. They will then have a n opportunity a t the end of the day to change their book.
Other I a m hoping to use cl ips from Disney’s ‘the Incredibles’ to link with our Superhero topi c. I a m a ware that this film is a PG, therefore if any pa rent does not wish thei r chi l d to wa tch cl i ps from thi s fi l m pl ea s e l et me know. We wi ll be making our own art a prons on Thurs da y 09.09.15- pl ea s e bri ng i n a l a rge ol d s hi rt. We wi ll need a lot of ma terials to make our superhero lairs- please bring a ny junk model l i ng i tems you ma y ha ve s uch a s cerea l boxes .
Individual presentations- La s t yea r the children l oved bringing i n their topic related show and tell. Whi le this will continue on a Tuesday I would like the chi ldren to have more of a n opportunity to pra cti se their speaking a nd l istening s kills. Therefore, once a week on a Thursday one child will ha ve the opportunity to ca rry out a 5-10 minute pres entation to the class. This may be topic related, a fa vourite hobby or a holiday they ha ve been on. It i s completely up to the child. They may use ICT, photographs or objects. The world is your oyster!
