Our 50th Anniversary celebrations As you may realise this term has marked a significant milestone in the history of St Michael’s as pupils, staff, parents and friends have joined together to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the school. St Michael’s Secondary Modern School was officially opened on October 6 1965 by Her Royal Highness, The Princess Margaret, and was dedicated by The Lord Archbishop of York. A number of events to mark the anniversary of this prestigious occasion have been held over the past few weeks, including a service of consecration of the new Chapel and library; our magnificent Armstrong Centre, led by the Bishop of Blackburn, the Rt Reverend Julian Henderson and funded by the Trust of St Michael’s. Following the service of consecration, the eponymous Chairman of Governors, Mrs Freda Armstrong, along with her husband Governor Geoff Armstrong unveiled a plaque in the new state-of-the-art building which takes their name in recognition of their commitment and unfailing dedication to our school. Bishop Julian also unveiled a plaque in the school entrance hall and then, watched by pupils around the Quad, planted an oak tree and time capsule … a legacy for future generations! We have also welcomed back to St Michael’s former pupils, staff and friends on our Open Day held last Saturday. It was delightful to see so many P.T.O.
