Family Numeracy: Course Outline. Week Taster

Topic Making clocks: How we can use clocks and time to help our children with maths.

Course introduction and enrolment: Discussion about everyday maths and maths in school, making a learning resource to use at home.

How our children learn: Foundation stage, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. What do our children know and how we can help them learn/ practice? Making maths jigsaws

Addition: Different strategies and methods of addition. How we can practice addition at home. Making number cards to use at home.

Subtraction: Different strategies and methods of subtraction. How we can practice subtraction at home. Making a number line.

Vocabulary and games: Using vocabulary to describe different number operations. Playing and evaluating maths games.

Multiplication is the opposite of division: Doing an investigation, practising and learning times tables. Games with times tables

Division and multiplication methods: Multiplying by 10 and 100, dividing by 10 and 100. Exploring different methods of multiplication and division.

Shapes: Naming and describing 2D shapes, calculating area and perimeter, naming and describing 3D shapes. Shape games

Measure: Why and what do we measure? Different units and reading scales. Measure activities we can do at home.

Evaluation and celebration: Course evaluation party and certificate giving. (Can include children)
