Year 6

 It’s the final year at Lomeshaye.  It’s the most important – New Tests!  Frequent liaisons with High Schools.  Transition from Junior to Secondary.  Tests- Standardised Scores/SATS  Sets  Intervention groups  Teaching independence

The Tests  SATs week begins  There are two areas being tested in the SATs: Maths and English, each with two or three papers of varying length (maybe Science).  We will work closely with pupils to ensure they are familiar with the different formats.  There is no longer a mental maths test it has been replaced by an arithmetic test.

Why are SATs so important?  Like any other formal examination process.  Give you information about where your child is (academically).  Gives you a comparison to see how much they have progressed throughout their time at Lomeshaye Junior School.  Informs secondary schools of academic ability/setting.  Improves child's educational chances and opportunities in future.

What will they tell us? • Where your child is in relation to national expectations for their age.

HOW TO HELP • • • • •

Read with your child every night ask them what the book is about, who are the characters, what do they do?

Practise times tables every night, test your child so that they know all of their times tables when called out randomly.

Ask your child to complete writing tasks for you, a shopping list, a story for a member of the family, perhaps they could start writing a diary of what they do each day and how they feel.

Ask your child about their day at school, what they have been learning about.

Make sure that they do their homework and bring it back to school on time.

• Encourage your child to come to homework club at lunchtime.

• Ensure that your child attends every booster club and/or tuition session.

Our Vision for Reading At Lomeshaye Junior School we aim to develop reading skills with our pupils in order to improve their life chances, provide them with life skills and to promote reading for pleasure and enjoyment.

We believe that reading can open doors for our pupils and can help them to gain experiences, improve language and vocabulary skills and stimulate their imaginations. We aim to create confident readers who have good independent learning skills and develop a range of interests through reading.

Reading for pleasure contributes to educational success, our journey to success focuses on developing a life-long love of reading and equipping our pupils for the next stage on their journey

Reading at Home – Enjoy!

• Children are expected to read at home every night for at least 10 minutes each night.

• Make reading visible; have books available in your home • Share books every day; • Boys need to see that reading is something men do.

• Talk about books.

• Sit and listen - don’t do chores around the reader!

• Respect choices.

What Happens When Someone Breaks the Rules? » GOLD AWARD– you will be the star of the day and receive a special gold sticker in your journal.

» SILVER means that you have followed the rules and listened carefully when you are supposed to. Your teacher is very pleased with you. » GREEN is what is expected at ALL times. Everyone starts the day on green and if you are well behaved and complete your work properly you will stay on green for the whole day. » AMBER is a warning for you to improve your behaviour.

You have done something that is not acceptable and you need to improve quickly and get back to being green. » RED = Reflection – miss your play time and think about your behaviour and how you can change it. If you have 3 reds in one week a letter goes home.

ALWAYS Children

• Children who never have their name on Amber or Red show that they ALWAYS try their best.

• GREEN is what is expected by all pupils, all of the time.

• SILVER and GOLD mean that you are super or outstanding.

• We need to reward pupils who are ALWAYS trying their best with behaviour.

• Each term there will be a challenge for every child in every class. The challenge is not to get on amber or red. If you are always on Green, Silver or Gold then you are an ALWAYS child. A special treat/reward will be organised if you are an ALWAYS child at the end of the term.
