How to support your child’s learning at home Please ensure that your child reads for at least 10 minutes every night, and records what they have read in their reading record.

Homework Year 5 children are given learning log homework every Friday to be handed in the following week. It’s best to spread the work out through the week rather than do it all in one go. It must be completed to an acceptable standard.

There will usually be a maths task, spellings to learn and a Literacy or Creative Curriculum activity.

Mr Smith runs a drop in homework club on Monday lunchtimes for children who would like some help with their work.

All year 5 children are expected to know their tables to 12x12 and associated division facts off by heart by now. Tables need to be practised regularly so they are not forgotten.

This is so important because rapid recall of tables means they will be able to apply the knowledge to more complex calculations.

Make sure you know your targets and are constantly striving to achieve them.

Curriculum Overview Year 5 Miss Payne, Mr Rushton and Miss Briggs

Autumn Term 1

English: In literacy we have been looking at a range of poetic styles including Kennings and Cinquains. Later in the term we will be studying ‘The Boy in the Girl’s Bathroom’ which will be our class novel. By the end of the unit children will have developed their empathy skills by writing in role.

History: What makes Britain Great?

Creative Curriculum: Ourselves – I am what I am!

Children will be looking at their faces closely and refining their sketching skills in order to create a self portrait. Children will also be thinking about how they will be able to reach their own targets and what they need to do to help themselves and those around them.

The children will be looking at what’s made Britain great since the writing of the Magna Carta, eight hundred years ago. They will consider how significant people have shaped the country in which they live and think about how they themselves can contribute to making Britain great.

Visits and Visitors: As part of our creative curriculum theme we are focusing on British values, so are looking forward to working with actors to create a play in a day called We are Britain!

Maths: In Maths we will continue to learn about place value of large numbers including decimals to 3 decimal places. We are learning how to round numbers to different powers of ten and how to multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000. Our arithmetic skills are practiced in our weekly big maths sessions.

Science: In Science children will be learning about how humans physically change over time. They will also interpret a range of data by looking at the relationships between ages, weight and the heights of different babies. They will also consider the relationship between the mass of an animal and its gestation period. Year 5 will also be studying the local area by observing changes taking place over the year.

Computing: We will find out about how to stay safe online and will use the coding tool Scratch to create animated portraits about eSafety.

We will developing our programming skills to make our portraits speak and ask questions.
