Year 2 Curriculum Overview Autumn 1 In fiction we will be reading stories in familiar settings and creating a new story about friendship which is set in a school. In non-fiction we will be reading about how baby animals are cared for and writing an explanation of a frog’s life cycle. Also the children will research then write an information text on African animals. In Maths we will be learning to:  Estimate and count a number of objects up to 100; locate numbers on 0−100 beaded lines and 1−100 squares; compare pairs of numbers and find a number in between; order three numbers, order 2-digit numbers  Revise number bonds to 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10; know number bonds to 10 and begin to learn related subtraction facts; know multiple of 10 number bonds to 100, learn bonds to 20, rehearse number bonds to 10 and 20 using stories  Double numbers to double 15, use patterns in number bonds, use number bonds to solve more difficult additions, to subtract and to solve additions bridging 10  Sort 2D shapes according to symmetry properties using Venn diagrams, identify right angles and sort shapes using Venn diagrams, recognise squares, rectangles, circles, triangles, ovals and hexagons and discover which tessellate, sort shapes and objects using a two-way Carroll diagram  Begin to mark numbers on a landmarked line, compare and order numbers, using < and > signs, find 1 and 10 more or less using the 100-square, find 10 more and 10 less than any 2-digit number Our RE topic is New Beginnings and we will explore the questions;  Where do I come from?  Why are some beginnings easy and some difficult?  Will there be many new beginnings in my life? Also we will spend a week learning about Judaism focusing on Shabbat. Our topic in science is ‘Healthy Me’ and the children will be learning about:  What humans need for healthy living  Keeping fit  Healthy eating  Where our food comes from  Classifying food We will be investigating whether the tallest children have the biggest shoe size. This half term we will be exploring the question, ‘Where would you prefer to live England or Africa?’ We will be researching where Africa is in the world and what life is like there. Areas of focus will be weather, animals, comparing a school day in Africa & England and finding out what African people are proud of. During gymnastics sessions the children will be learning to link two basic actions fluently and with control. Games sessions will be delivered by Manchester United coaches on Friday mornings. Our topic in Computing is ‘We are Game Testers’ and the children will be exploring how computer games work. Our Art project this half term will be creating a painting of African animals in the style of Tinga Tinga.
