Welcome to Year 1L. We are very excited to be back & looking forward to a great year!

Transitioning into Year One from the Foundation Stage can be a challenge for some children but we are here to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Behaviour Our positive behaviour management policy along with other policies is available to view on our school website.

Our school has 7 values, which show us how to behave in school and throughout our lives. We have talked about these with the children and they include:       

On our 1st day in Year 1 we created some class rules to make sure our learning environment is a happy and safe place to be. These include:  Listening when someone is speaking.  Putting up our hands to speak.  Follow instructions quickly.  Always do your best work.  Be a caring friend.

We have a zone board for behaviour with movable children’s names, comprising of: Gold Silver Green Amber Red Behaviour zone meanings Gold Excellent achievement within a targeted Gospel value Exceptional achievement

Our class has 10 steps until the chosen reward, which takes place every 3 weeks in the autumn term and at the end of the half term in spring and summer terms.

Example rewards include:  Extra PE lesson  Chosen DVD  Outdoor/indoor picnic  Party/disco  Singing songs We believe good behaviour is an expectation and throughout the day we comment and praise children verbally and with other rewards to show our appreciation for children’s good behaviour choices. Dojos We are trialling using dojos in school for this first half term. www.classdojo.com Each child in the class has a ‘dojo’ (virtual animal) and they can get points during the day from doing something positive in school eg- Being a good friend, staying on task, working as table etc. Parents can log on at home to see what points children have and children can log on at home to create their own dojos. We are aiming for 30 dojo points each before the half term holidays!

Morning drop off  The class teacher or the teaching assistant will open the classroom door at 8.45am.  Place any reading or homework books that need changing in their hands, so they can put it in boxes in the classroom.  Book bags go into boxes on their assigned tables.  Coats go on name pegs on the corridor.

The classroom door will be shut promptly at 8.55am.

If you are late, please take your child to the school office. Do not knock on the window, as this will distract learning inside.

End of day collection  School finishes at 3pm sharp.  Wait outside the classroom door and we will call your child to leave.

Gates open at 2.55pm so please be prompt to collect your child, as teachers and teaching assistants have after school clubs and meetings to attend.

We will not let your child go home with an unfamiliar person, unless we have your permission. Either tell the adult on the door in the morning or ring the office before home time.

Book bags Please ensure your child brings their book bag to school every day with all school books, regardless if they need changed.

Snack Each day your child will be provided with a piece of fresh fruit or vegetable as part of the free fruit and vegetable scheme.

Water bottles Your child needs their own water bottle to keep in class, which they can access throughout the day and they will change their water regularly. Please make sure your child’s name is written clearly on their water bottle.

PE Your child will need:  A white t-shirt  Navy/Black shorts  Black pumps PE kits remain in school and are sent home every half term and lessons are on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Children wearing earrings are not allowed to do PE. Please ensure long hair is tied back for PE sessions for health and safety purposes.

Clothing We ask that the children come to school every day with a suitable coat to keep them warm for when they go outside.

Also please ensure all clothes are labelled with your child’s name or initials. (school uniform, coats and PE kits).

Letters/Money Any money for breakfast club and afterschool clubs should be given to the office or class teacher in an envelope with the name and amount on the front.

Homework in 1L Reading In Year One children are given books to take home which are at their reading level.

- A reading book - A diary - A reading journal Ensure children bring their books every day to school and it is signed daily after listening to your child read. It doesn’t have to be a long comment- A signature is fine.

Each week children are expected to complete at least 2 activities in their reading journal for 2 different books. This is to support reading skills. These are listed at the front of the book.

They include:  Story maps  Story mountains  Character reviews  Describing the setting  Changing the cover and blurb etc. o Books are not changed until the activity has been completed.

It is so important that children are not only reading a little every day at home but are also being read to. A good way to entice them is to suggest that you read either a page/word/sentence at a time, gradually building their confidence.

Encourage children to sound out words they don’t know using their phonics and blend together to make a word.

Throughout the year children will read books from the reading scheme at different levels and children are tested half termly to define which level they are: Pink Gold Red White Yellow Lime Blue School Library books Green Orange Turquoise Purple Homework This will be sent home on a Friday and must be returned by Wednesday.

Spellings are tested on Fridays.

It will include:  A short English or Maths activity relating to work covered in class.  15 spellings to write out.  Write 5 sentences using 5 words from the 15 spellings.

In class we say LOOK, COVER, WRITE, CHECK when learning words. This could be encouraged at home to help learn their spellings.

There is a spelling rule at the top of each set to go through with your child.

Phonics We use www.phonicsplay.co.uk in school to help teach phonics. This can also be accessed at home and provides some games children are familiar with to help them learn their letters and sounds.

Maths Children have been given their own usernames, passwords and school code to access www.activelearnprimary.co.uk The Abacus pupil world is the place that your child will log into to play maths games, complete interactive activities and access rewards. They earn rewards by completing the games and activities that their teacher has allocated to them. They can also watch pupil videos, which recap key teaching topics.
