Albany Academy

Albany Academy is a highly successful school that combines a caring and supportive atmosphere with outstanding academic outcomes for all of our pupils. From their induction day in year 6 to their last day in year 11, we make sure that every one of our pupils is treated as the individual they are and given the personalised support, challenge and guidance they need to reach their potential. At Albany, only the best is good enough and we pride ourselves on setting the very highest standards for our school community. These high expectations in terms of behaviour, effort, uniform and achievement are an essential element of the school’s success. Every member of the school community knows and understands these expectations and the results of this can be seen in every lesson and in every classroom, every day.

“Students in the academy are delightful. Their behaviour, both in and out of the classroom, is outstanding. They are universally polite, respectful, look smart and are an absolute credit to the academy and the community.’’ (Ofsted)

Enjoying learning at Albany Academy “Leadership is outstanding.” (Ofsted)

“Students are well cared for and supported. As a result, they feel safe…. the academy is a community where all are valued and respected. Students are very happy in the academy.” (Ofsted)

At Albany, we understand the importance of a smooth and supported transition from primary school to secondary school. Our highly experienced pastoral team will work with pupils in their current school, on induction day at Albany and throughout their time with us. We ensure that they have the support they need to feel happy and secure in school. Every pupil has a form tutor who he/she will stay with for their five years at Albany. This consistency ensures that strong links are formed between home and school and provides a stable point of contact for parents/ carers should they need to communicate with school. It also means that the form tutors really know their pupils well and are able to support them as they move through the school and on to further education or employment.

High quality teaching at Albany Academy “The curriculum offers a good variety of courses, with extensive opportunities for students to develop their spiritual, moral, social and cultural understanding, such as in the life studies’ programme.” (Ofsted)

The quality of teaching at Albany is exceptional and is based on a commitment to ensuring that every pupil reaches his/her individual potential. We enable every child to have access to the latest technology, equipment, resources and teaching methods in order that he/she makes the best possible progress towards their targets. In the lower years, pupils study a broad and balanced curriculum of subjects including maths, English, sciences, PE, history, geography, music, drama, design technology, ICT, French, RE, life studies and art. GCSEs start at the beginning of Year 9 in English, maths and science and options start in Year 10. We provide a number of different pathways enabling pupils to follow the English Baccalaureate route (good GCSEs in English, mathematics, two sciences, a language and history or geography) or follow a more practical, vocational route dependent upon their needs and future ambitions. This personalisation ensures that all our pupils leave with the best possible qualifications and skills for the next step in their lives; whether that be further education, training or employment.

Opportunities beyond the classroom at Albany Academy “Charity work is a strong feature within the academy. There is also a strong sense of a community among staff and students.” (Ofsted)

“Students are very happy in the academy.” (Ofsted)

Life at Albany extends beyond the classroom and school grounds. We offer a wide-range of opportunities for pupils to enrich their secondary education beyond the normal school day. Whether it is sports’ clubs and teams, musical tuition and the school band, drama clubs or forensic science investigations, Duke of Edinburgh qualifications or the annual skiing trip. There is something for everyone to become involved with and enjoy. Albany is a school very much at the heart of the local community. As such, our pupils are regularly involved in activities to support that community. We support a number of local and national charities, carry out voluntary work at local nurseries and care homes and engage with the local council and other organisations. This raises awareness in our pupils of their role in society and the importance of working together to support each other to achieve success.
