17th July 2015 Dear Parents We have had a fantastic year and the students have made us incredibly proud of all they have achieved. I have been particularly proud of the contributions the students have made to the final few activities of this term, a flavour of which can be seen in the enclosed College newsletter. Six different groups of students made presentations to our Governors; the Year 7 LiT programme told us about how they had worked this year to explore new reading texts. The Year 9 peer mentors and their Year 6 mentees told us about how they had worked together to smooth the transition from primary to secondary. The students who had taken part in a trip to London shared their stories of gruesome endings from the Tower of London. The Young Enterprise team responsible for Soul Socks were able to share their trophy for their marketing award and our new Head Boy Sam Macleod and Head Girl Elizabeth Emson informed us about the changes their student council would be implementing over the coming year. In addition, we have also had a brilliant evening of song and dance where the students and parents raised over £118.00 in a spontaneous collection for St Michaels Hospice. Finally today we are celebrating our first Rye College Cup Day and, as I write, we are all looking forward to the staff versus students races this afternoon! None of these achievements or the others from this year would have been possible without the hard work, commitment and dedication of each and every member of staff. I am certain you will join me in thanking them all for the contribution they have made to Rye College this year. Behind every student there are of course you as parents and carers who give so much support to your young people, helping them achieve their potential and I would like to thank each of you as well. This year we have adopted the motto REACH. It has been a real pleasure to see so many students acting as ambassadors for these values so far this year. R - Respect for ourselves, each other and the environment. E - Engaging with every opportunity we are presented with even if it means stepping outside of our comfort zone. A - Achievement through resilience and a positive attitude to each new day. C - Curiosity driving our thirst for knowledge and desire to improve. H - Happiness, a smile will see us through anything and ensure that we are able to take the best from every situation. I am very pleased to announce that we have a number of staff who have achieved promoted posts with us for September. Miss Zarah Daniel will be our Pastoral Community Leader for Year 7, Karen Westbrook will move to be our Pastoral Community Leader for Years 8 and 9 and Paul Harrison will be the Pastoral Community Leader for Years 10 and 11. These colleagues, along with your child’s tutor, should be your first port of call for any day-today concerns or queries you may have. From September, subjects at Rye College will be part of a Core Learning Area with a Leader and a Second in Charge (2ic). Core Learning 1: Science, Technology, Food Technology, Computing and Business Studies will be led by a new member of staff Mr Paul Franks who will be supported by Mr Jon Simmonds. Core Learning 2: English and Maths will be led by Mrs Rhiannon Chillingworth supported by Mr Colin Morris and Miss Rachael Street.
