INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS VISIT HNC

AS and A2 Fine Art students and Art Foundation Diploma students have enjoyed taking part in practical workshops this academic year with the highly successful and well-regarded artists, Sally Barker and Ian Murphy.

These great workshops give our students the opportunity to ask professional artists questions about their working methods and ideas, with students using these practical sessions to draw inspiration for their own work and portfolios.

IT’S SHOWTIME! The Annual Christmas Dance and Musical Theatre showcase was a celebration of our talented Performing Arts students. The show demonstrated the work they had undertaken during the Autumn

term and forms part of their final grade assessment.

During the show, students performed songs and scenes from musicals such as We Will Rock You, Kiss me Kate and Copacabana.

As well as performing songs and dances from these well-known musical productions, students also performed self-choreographed numbers.

To prepare for the show, students worked with external practitioners, Thom Meredith and Chris Pulleyn, to learn their songs and were also invited to take part in workshops throughout the term with musical theatre stars such as Richard Murphy from the West End Touring Company.

The evening ended with a fantastic grand finale, with the students performing ‘Let it Go’, choreographed by ex-professional ballerina Fiona Noonan.

CELEBRATION EVENING CLASS OF 2014 Former students of Huddersfield New College started the new year in style, as the Class of 2014 gathered at Huddersfield Town Hall for the college’s annual awards evening.

Special guest, Professor Bob Cryan CBE, The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Huddersfield and fellow Huddersfield New College alumnus, attended the event as a guest speaker and to present some well-deserved awards.

All the students in attendance had an extra reason to celebrate this year, as they all played a part in helping us post our best ever exam results in August 2014, ensuring that we remained in the top 10% of sixth form colleges nationwide for student performance on A Levels and BTEC qualifications.

Over 350 students were recognised for their achievements, receiving certificates, vouchers and plaques to celebrate and reward their success.

Five of those students were also given special awards for their exceptional performance inside and outside of college.

From Children in Need to National Christmas Jumper Day, everyone in the College community has been involved with our charity fund-raising events and have helped us to raise much need awareness and funds for both local and national charities.

POETRY IN MOTION Following on from Saliha Khadim’s success in being chosen to represent the College in the regional heat of the ‘Poetry by Heart’ competition held in Leeds, we’re pleased to announce that she has now won the county heat and holds the title of West Yorkshire Poetry by Heart Champion.

This year’s competition was stiff; Saliha was up against other student ‘Poetry by Heart’ champions from Castleford Academy, The Co-operative Academy of Leeds, Crofton Academy, Leeds Grammar School, Ossett Academy and Sixth Form College, Woodkirk Academy and Roundhay High School. Each student recited three poems in front of an audience consisting of the competitors’ friends and family, and the competition’s judges, at the Leeds Central Library. This year’s judges were of a high calibre and included Ursula Holden Gill, a storyteller and actress, James Nash, and Peter Spafford, both published poets.

by Benjamin Zephaniah, and ‘Stretcher Bearer’ by Tommy Crawford – coincidentally the same WW1 poem that the HNC 2014 National Semi-Finalist, Jennifer O’ Sullivan, picked.

HIGH FLIER JACK RETURNS TO HNC! HNC alumnus, Jack, returned to the College’s Sports Department for a career talk with current students. Jack, who graduated in the summer of 2012, came back to talk about his career training as a commercial pilot, helping to inspire our current cohort to aim high.

Jack, who studied a mixture of BTECs and A Levels in Sport, Sociology, Psychology, and Law, had always wanted to be a pilot. He wasn’t sure if his dream would be possible though, as it costs tens of thousands of pounds to train, and often the training is self-funded, so he chose a wide range of subjects to give himself the very best possible employment chances he could, whatever his chosen career was to be.

Luckily for Jack, he was fortunate enough to be offered the money to complete his training by his parents and grandparents, so in November 2012, he sat the tests required to kick start his flying career. After passing the tests and completing his initial training, Jack successfully landed a position flying with Ryan Air as First Officer, and will be undertaking his final training, and building up his flying hours, from March.

Jack is now a Co-Pilot and hopes to be a Captain by 2019- when Jack will still only be 25!

Jack said “I loved my time at HNC, it’s a good learning environment and atmosphere. I’d recommend prospective students to come here, and my advice to current students is to work hard... it pays off in the end!”

potential, and it was this support that led the College to achieving this award. With such a positive view of equality and diversity on campus,

‘Investors in Diversity’ award in December 2011. The prestigious award means that the College is one of only a handful of colleges in the UK to be

Every year, students from across the UK are encouraged to apply for this prestigious accolade, and the foundation receives hundreds of applications a year.

The College has a history of success with these awards, and this year was no different. Three of our very talented Class of 2014 were successful in their applications, which is phenomenal considering only 87 students out of the hundreds that applied were successful in their applications. One of the award winners, Shanice Kaye, travelled down to the House of Lords for the Awards Ceremony with Equality and Diversity Manager, Erika Montgomery at the beginning of March.

Shanice worked incredibly hard to complete her time at the College, and has now moved on to an undergraduate degree programme at the University of Huddersfield.

NEW COLLEGE STUDENTS WIN HAMER AWARD!

New College art students have won Hamer Awards from the Huddersfield Art Society, a prize given in memory of former member, John James Hamer.

Saffron Rajwadi and Andrea Martinovic from the College successfully presented several examples of their artwork and answered questions about their ideas, inspiration and working processes from members of the society.

Saffron, who is 18, was one of our highest achieving AS grade Fine Art students last year, won one of the top prizes. She is currently working towards an A* in her final year. Saffron works mainly with acrylic paints, but is also an accomplished draughtswomen. She has a particular interest in surreal portraiture and has also created some wonderful landscape work while studying at the College.

Andrea, who is also 18, won one of the runner up prizes. She is one of the Art Department’s hardest working students, and with an A grade already under her belt from her first year, she’s on course to achieve great things in her final year too! Andrea also enjoys working with acrylics and is a fine still life artist, as well as painting some exciting landscape pieces as part of her AS and A2 work.

We’d like to congratulate Saffron and Andrea on their well deserved awards!

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL STEM CONFERENCE… Our Annual STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Conference held at the College in association with Royds Hall Community School was an event not to be missed! The Conference had a variety of industry and educational leaders from the STEM community contributing to workshops, talks and exhibitions.

Students from across Kirklees attended alongside their parents, teachers and careers advisors, and were able to explore the options that were available for those wishing to enter STEM industries.

School and College students from the Kirklees area took part in engaging workshops designed to give them ‘tasters’ of their chosen careers, and each student was able to attend up to three workshops on the night.

Nigel Wright was on hand to introduce Syngenta’s well-regarded apprenticeship programme, and to give advice on skills and qualifications employers look for when recruiting, alongside some top interview tips. Representatives from the University of Huddersfield talked to potential students about a number of the STEM course pathways available to undergraduates, and hosted two popular engineering workshops, led by Dr. Leigh Fleming and Professor Ian Glover.

THE FINAL SHOWCASE HNC Music students rocked the College at the final year music showcase, Huddstock. The show is run by the College’s final year Music students as part of their final year assessment, and everything from the marketing of the event to the logistics on the night were managed by students (who also performed on the night!); no mean feat but one pulled off with aplomb!

With Darius ‘D-Gilla’ Gilman compering the night, Huddstock was launched with performances by first year students. Bands including Astral Planes, Giveaways, Paul’s Carpet Warehouse and The Swallows, who rocked some well loved classics as well as performing original songs, and Ella Caton braved the stage for a beautiful solo performance of ‘Cry me a River’.

After a quick interval and refreshment break, it was time for the final year students to take to the stage. Purple Suit Mafia,

Blank Space, Theatre and Friend and Boiler House Society blew the audience away with some amazing renditions, both covers and original songs. Personal favourites from the night were a fantastic rendition of ‘Feel Good Inc.’ and an acoustic performance of ‘No Diggety’!

The talent within the music department was clear to see at this showcase, and the success of the evening is testament to our hard working students and staff. We hope that this year’s performance is already galvanising the first years, who will be doing this all again in 2016... and we can’t wait!

Huddersfield New College has been awarded the prestigious ‘Leadership Academy’ status by Sports Leaders UK!

The College has worked alongside Sports Leaders UK for a number of years to deliver qualifications and accreditation to help enhance students’ skills and experience, and at the heart of these awards and qualifications are leadership, volunteering, education and community development. The College and its students have gone above and beyond what is expected of them in these areas over several years, and it was this dedication that helped the College to achieve Leadership Academy status.

Six Book Challenge

For the second year running, Huddersfield New College’s Library joined with The Reading Agency to run The Six Book Challenge. The challenge encourages students to sign up to read and review six pieces of writing within a set period of time. Students can read anything, from fiction to magazine articles, as the challenge aims to encourage more than just reading books; at the end of the challenge, we hope that we’ve managed to turn non-readers in to avid readers!

2015 saw an increase in HNC students signing up to, and completing, the challenge and to celebrate this success, the College invited local author Rachel McIntyre to attend and present the awards.

Rachel, who until recently was a teacher at the College, jumped at the chance to come back! Before presenting the awards, Rachel discussed

her first book ‘Me & Mr J’, her upcoming publications and answered students’ questions about the creative writing process. After discussing the varied reads the students now had under their belt, Rachel said: “The great thing about reading is there is something for everyone.” We couldn’t have put it better ourselves, Rachel!

Each student who took part in the Challenge received a certificate of participation and was entered into a prize draw. Although all the participants are winners in our eyes, only six winners could take away a prize. Congratulations go to Zaenab, Mu’Aaz, Vanda, Aimee-Jo and Kitty, who bagged themselves a book and a Six Book Challenge mug! Special mention goes to Leona, who was lucky enough to win the grand prize draw and took home a Kindle Paperwhite.
